On the topic of the Old Man...
I really like the thought that:
Our old man was bound by sin and that was its focus.
In our new man is a new heart and new desires. Sin no longer has dominion over us. Altho we are not perfect yet we are a new creature in Christ who desires to be more like Him.
Amen. If we were perfect concerning unfruitfulness, why would a Christian need intercession by the Holy Spirit? I have testified many times before judges in intercession for failures of felons new in Christ. All judges consider that, and some agree, softening their view of an accused. I might declare the person is growing up in our custody, like a child in a family. That principle extends to youths until legal age, but it also can be extended into adult years.
The Law of Moses can do one thing, and that is to define sin and prescribe the penalties for not obeying even one part. It can only put off penalty of sin through temporary appeasement of God, putting off His wrath. There is no grace in the Law. It is also holy, not a source of sin. I
Romans 7:25 (KJV)
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
It sees sin for what it is, and judges it. Well, Jesus died to the penalty of sin, taking it upon Himself. When He died, the demands of the Law were satisfied before God who established the Law. When a carnal judge smiles at repentance, that judge does less than what Jesus did, and less than what the Father was willing to do.
So what is the remedy? Keep reading Romans. We have the rescuerer. He doesn't take us out of this body of sin, but helps us deal with it in the Spirit. That is a daily struggle. To say we have conquered the problem, having no sin left in us, is a lie if we are still alive in the flesh body.
