Jeremiah 44:3-10 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)
“3Because of the evil they have done. They provoked Me to anger by continuing to burn incense and to serve other gods that neither they nor you nor your fathers ever knew. 4Yet I sent you all My servants the prophets again and again, saying: ‘Do not do this detestable thing that I hate.’
5But they did not listen or incline their ears; they did not turn from their wickedness or stop burning incense to other gods. 6Therefore My wrath and anger poured out and burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, so that they have become the desolate ruin they are today.
7So now, this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Why are you doing such great harm to yourselves by cutting off from Judah man and woman, child and infant, leaving yourselves without a remnant? 8Why are you provoking Me to anger by the work of your hands by burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt, where you have gone to reside?
As a result, you will be cut off and will become an object of cursing and reproach among all the nations of the earth. 9Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers and of the kings of Judah and their wives, as well as the wickedness that you and your wives committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 10To this day they have not humbled themselves or shown reverence, nor have they followed My instruction or the statutes that I set before you and your fathers.”
Who are They?
Who are they today who are willfully and deliberately and habitually sinning against God without remorse, and without repentance, and without obedience to God and to His commands? They are the selfish and the self-indulgent who do as they please without regard for God and for His commands, and without regard for who they hurt in the process. They are idolaters and adulterers and the morally impure. And they are liars and those who fake their Christianity but who do not live what they profess.
They are superficial “Christians” who give the appearance of being in relationship with Jesus Christ but by their lifestyles they deny Him. They are those who give lip service to the Lord but who depart from Him and from His commands and from all that is holy, just, righteous, and morally pure, in order to gratify the sinful cravings of the flesh. They are drunk on sin, living to please the flesh, and following after the idols of this world while they profess Christ as Lord and Savior and salvation from sin for themselves.
And they are parasites. They are manipulators, deceivers, malicious, liars, the morally unclean, opportunists, untrustworthy, egocentrics who take advantage of other people and their vulnerability, and who use gaslighting as a way to control others and to manipulate others. They love to play mind games with others to keep them off balance and to create friction, also as a means to control and to manipulate others to their advantage. And they love to play the part of the victim when they are indeed the perpetrators.
Many are they today who are living in addiction to sexual immorality, who are habitually committing adultery against their spouses. And this doesn’t have to be a physical relationship with another person. Biblical adultery can be purely to just lust after another to whom one is not married, which can include (but does not have to) addiction to pornography and to self-gratification. They may also be those who are addicted to alcoholic beverages, or they can merely be intoxicated to their sinful habits.
Even though many of them profess faith in Jesus Christ with their lips they dismiss Him by their thoughts, attitudes, actions, and behaviors. For their idols are not something made out of wood or gold or metal or stone, but they are the sinful desires and passions of their own hearts, i.e. the things they long for and lust after and want more than they want to submit to God and to surrender to His will and to follow Him in obedience to His commands. They want their sins more than a biblical marriage to their spouses, too.
Therefore, they are those who provoke God to anger because they profess to know Him, and yet they deny Him habitually by chasing after their idols. For the god they serve is not our creator God, but it is whatever their flesh craves and gives in to and yields control over to on a deliberate and habitual basis, which is against God and against His will and against His Word. And even if they are confronted with the truth of what the Scriptures teach, they will not listen. But they will hear God say, “I never knew you. Depart!”

Obey freely My word.
Follow Me in all of My ways.
Do all that I say.
Hear Me gently whisper to you
My will for your life and future.
Give all of your life and heart to
Follow Me always.”
Repent of your sins and worship Jesus.
He’s your Lord and Master.
He died for your sins so you could
Live with Him today.
He has a plan for your life and
He gives purpose and direction.
He gives meaning to your life,
So follow Him today.
“I love you so much I gave My life for
You to walk in My ways,
Living for Me each day as you
Bow to Me and pray.
Witness for Me of your love for Me and
Of My grace and mercy,
How I died to save you of your
Sins now and always.”
