The 7 Deadly Sins

Proverbs 6:16-19

These six things the LORD hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
#1 - A proud look,
#2 - A lying tongue,
#3 - Hands that shed innocent blood,
#4 - A heart that devises wicked plans,
#5 - Feet that are swift in running to evil,
#6 - false witness who speaks lies,
#7 - And one who sows discord among brethren.

Matthew Henry's Commentary

A rebuke to slothfulness.

Diligence in business is every man's wisdom and duty; not so much that he may attain worldly wealth, as that he may not be a burden to others, or a scandal to the church. The ants are more diligent than slothful men. We may learn wisdom from the meanest insects, and be shamed by them.

Habits of indolence and indulgence grow upon people. Thus life runs to waste; and poverty, though at first at a distance, gradually draws near, like a traveler; and when it arrives, is like an armed man, too strong to be resisted. All this may be applied to the concerns of our souls. How many love their sleep of sin, and their dreams of worldly happiness! Shall we not seek to awaken such? Shall we not give diligence to secure our own salvation? (Pr 6:12-19)

Seven things hateful to God.

If the slothful are to be condemned, who do nothing, much more those that do all the ill they can. Observe how such a man is described. He says and does every thing artfully, and with design. His ruin shall come without warning, and without relief. Here is a list of things hateful to God. Those sins are in a special manner provoking to God, which are hurtful to the comfort of human life. These things which God hates, we must hate in ourselves; it is nothing to hate them in others.

Let us shun all such practices, and watch and pray against them; and avoid, with marked disapproval, all who are guilty of them, whatever may be their rank. (Pr 6:20-35)

Nonetheless, all sins are 'deadly'

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord

But by the grace of GOD we can accept forgiveness through Jesus Christ alone

Matthew 26:28

For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins

Acts 10:43

To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins

Ephesians 1:7

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

Deadly 7

You misled me by the title. I was expecting the 7 deadly sins, the medieval construct of the 7 catergories all sins fall into. I shall have to write one on that later myself. Still, nice one dispite the misleading title. Keep writing.

How do you figure it is misleading? It is not misleading at all.

I had thought that I had explained why it was misleading in the original comment, namely that the title of the 7 deadly sins would lead one to assume that it was about the classically defined 7 deadly sins. Apparently this was not sufficient. Try reading my post under Bible Chat entitled the 7 deadly sins redux that I also posted today. That should clear up any misunderstanding.

It is NOT misleading and is very scriptural!
It was only misleading in your mind , because you were thinking in different terms!
You choice of words were not thought out well? Still our Words play an important part of what we are saying? I doubt you truly met that! That way!
Still it sounded harsh!

I'll have to study this. I never knew there was really a thing like 7 deadly sins, I thought it was just a saying by ordinary people.

God bless

Thank you so much brother Chad for sharing this. Can learn a lot of things from this.

God bless you.

Of course All scripture is true ,.
But we MUST know?
It only took one Sin to separate us from GOD.

Sin, ALL sin , brings death 100%

The wages of sin has NOT changed and ALL flesh dies because of just one sin.
Adam and Eve did just one sin.

So we must hate sin , which is rebellion to GOD!

response to Sins

To use the term deadly is actually a tradition of men, nevertheless sins are indeed deadly, and ought to be heeded by every professing Christian. But if we must have a title for Proverbs 6:16-19, it seems it would be “The Seven Hateful and Abominable Sins”, and we could add four more also, and they are: “And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbor; and love no false oath: for all these are the things that I hate, saith the Lord”, and also, “For the Lord God, the God of Israel, saith that He hateth putting away…”; and again, “Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God”.
But if there were a sin which could have been referred to as deadly, it would have been the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost.
Nevertheless, glory to God that you have listed these seven sins, for we who profess Christ need to know as much as we can about what sin is according to God, rather than what we think is sin, and moreover what we may not think is sin, may very well be sin according to God: we need to know them to be able to recognize them.
It is like that man called Simon in Acts.8:18-24, who, although he believed and was baptized, did not know that he was yet living in sin, until Peter informed him; for without the knowledge of God or the mind of God, we can only assume we know, but then our sins are left untouched, if we really don´t know.
It is a good thing to list what are sins according to God, if we have not the knowledge of them in our heart.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Sir, there is no such thing as "7 deadly sins" in the holy scriptures, which are able to make us wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. It is written, if any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God. The scriptures say that the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. And again, the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
