What are the 'Seven Deadly Sins'?

Many people fear a list of seven sins that God supposedly will not forgive. This list is known as the “seven deadly sins.” Is the idea of “seven deadly sins” Biblical? Yes and no. Proverbs 6:16-19 declares: “There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:

(1)
haughty eyes,
(2)
a lying tongue,
(3) hands that shed innocent blood,
(4)
a heart that devises wicked schemes,
(5)
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
(6)
a false witness who pours out lies, and
(7)
a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.”

However, this list is not what most people understand as the “seven deadly sins.” Most people understand the list of the “seven deadly sins” to be: pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed, and sloth. Although each of these are undeniably sins, they are never given the description of "the seven deadly sins" in the Bible. The traditional list of the “seven deadly sins” can function as a good way to categorize the many different sins that exist. Nearly every kind of sin could be placed under one of the seven categories. More importantly, however, is that we realize these seven sins are no more “deadly” than any other sin. All sin results in death (Romans 6:23).

Praise be to God, that through Jesus Christ, all of our sins, including the “seven deadly sins,” can be forgiven
(Matthew 26:28; Acts 10:43; Ephesians 1:7).

I have a question about a lying tongue, what constitutes a lie? Are white lies OK, to save someones feelings for example? Is it OK for children to be imaginative with their answers when they are asked eg what happened to my chocolate biscuit and they reply my (imaginary friend) Fred ate it?

Thanks also for reminding me about those sins that we often don't think about. It is all to easy to focus on one or two and forget the rest.

God Bless

I think children lying is not so much sinful as they are just children, growing and learning at their earliest stage. However, we are to teach them that lying is of course wrong. Once we receive the Word and convicted, we are held responsible for the knowledge given to us by the Word

Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary

Lie:
an intentional violation of the truth.

Lies are emphatically condemned in Scripture (John 8:44; 1 Tim. 1:9, 10; Rev. 21:27; 22:15).

Mention is made of the lies told by good men, as by...

Abraham (Gen. 12:12, 13; 20:2)
Isaac (26:7)
Jacob (27:24)
Hebrew midwives (Ex. 1:15-19)
Michal (1 Sam. 19:14)
David (1 Sam. 20:6)

As a Christian although we are expected to tell the truth all of time, it is not easy. I believe that it is important to try to be honest but is it possible for anyone to actually attain that level of honesty and survive in today's world? Can any of us actually say with complete conviction that we are always honest?

My Aunt who is a very devout Christian once worked as a secretary in an office. She was asked one day by the boss to tell people that he wasn't in, as he was too busy to see them. My Aunt told him "No I refuse to lie for you" and subsequently lost her job.

Another Christian lady I know gave up her employment working in a so called nice shop. Upon leaving she was asked to sign that she was leaving on a different date to make it look good for the boss. The boss said that she would give her a favourable reference if she did it. The lady turned to her boss and said that she would not lie. She was then faced with looking for other work with a 'satisfactory' reference instead of 'good' one.

Saying/doing things for the 'greater good' gets talked about a lot and it seems it quite often gets confused with who's greater good, the Fathers or our own. I will be re-evaluating what I think is permissible and what isn't on this topic. The beatitudes spring to mind. 'Just say a simple, `Yes, I will,' or `No, I won't.' Your word is enough. To strengthen your promise with a vow shows that something is wrong.' (Matt 5:37, new living)

Perhaps it is best to take things down to their simplist form instead of getting into the habit of embellishing the truth all the time. It seems quite often people unwittingly slip back into the habits of that comfortable world when perhaps they/I should be asking how committed we actually are.

God Bless

Good post Eve,

It seems quite often people unwittingly slip back into the habits of that comfortable world when perhaps they/I should be asking how committed we actually are.

This is a result of the subtle and crafty work of satan.
John 8:44
"For you are the children of your father the Devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning and has always hated the truth. There is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies."
