Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me. Psalm 51:10 AMPC

More than asking for forgiveness for his sin with Bathsheba and Uriah, David longed for God to take away sinful desires altogether. He knew that was the only way he wouldn’t hurt and offend God with his selfish, shortsighted behavior again. David was anticipating the Messiah, the one who would make such an incredible dream a reality.

Ezekiel 36:26 revealed this was God’s desire too, as He promised His people, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” It was a double prophecy: first, of the Messiah coming to make it possible for us to be born anew; and, ultimately, of the eternal age in which we will not have to fight our sinful natures to do what’s right.

David also understood that the Holy Spirit was crucial to such a revitalization of our spirits, begging God not to take His Spirit from him. As believers, we have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, our constant companion, helper, and give into God’s truth. He prompts us to confess our sins and assures us of God’s forgiveness.

Prayer: God, keep building the heart of Christ in me—to love You first and best and to love others the way You love me.
