It's a starry night. Everyone is getting ready for sleep, except you. You've been chosen to count all the sheep tonight. 1, 2,3... 34 they're all accounted for, except for that one lamb, who kept running off all day long from you. Silly little lamb, I hope she's ok, you think to yourself.Suddenly, foot steps are in the distance, and quickly turn your head, staff ready in hand to fight off whatever it may be coming yout way. " Put that staff down!" " Oh, it's just you Jacob," you reply with a sigh of relief, " I thought you were a wolf. I've been seeing a lot lately." " Nope, just me." says Jacob. " I went off to find that lamb that keeps running off, and I found her! It looks like we're going to have to carry her for awhile now. I had to break her legs to get her to stay with us." " When you says 'we', you mean 'me' Jacob. You ALWAYS make me do the dirty work!" you say sarcasticly. " That's why I love you, brother," says Jacob back to you.
You both walk back slowly to the core group. The fire, once a bright, brilliant flame has down become a dull dim. Simon pokes at it with his staff, " It's not too cold out tonight. Besides, all we needed it for was for some light, so Jacob would remember where we were at." "And I thank you for that,"replied Jacob. Jacob sits the lamb down onto the ground. She softly bleats, looks around for a little bit, then rests her heavy head on the ground to finally fall asleep.
"Aren't the stars brilliant tonight?" Jacob leans over and asks you. " They sure are. I've never seen them this clear," you reply. " Me neither. Well, goodnight little brother," Jacob says to you. " Goodnight," you say back, with sleep in your voice. Good nights are said, nodding of heads are done,and heavy eyes go shut.
As soon as you shut your eyes, a bright light appears. "Who let the fire go again?" you wonder. You open your eyes, but become very afraid, and shut them hard again. Everyone else in your group does the same, some have even turned over flat on their faces. A voice is heard, but this is no one's voice in your group. "Shepherds, why are you afraid. I bring you great news!!!! Tonight, in the near town of Bethlehem, a Savior, The Savior that was promised to you so long ago has come! He is the Messiah, The Kinsman Redeemer of souls has finally come! You'll find Him in a stable, with His parents, in swaddling clothes, laying in a manger. Go! See for yourself!" As soon as the voice was done, a large number of other voices gather in also, and sing praises unto this newborn King.
As soon as the voices appeared, they vanished. You're all so stunned. " What just happened?" you ask your brother. " I don't know!" he replies, stunned. "Angels, out of no where.......... a Messiah...... stable..... Bethelehem.. THE MESSIAH HAS COME!" Jacob shouts, leaping to his feet. " Come on everyone!" you shout to the group. " Let us go see this miracle that has happened!!!! The Messiah, the One that was said to come to earth long ago has finally come! Let's go! Let us see for ourselves the good news!" You all are so excited to hear this good news! Everyone jumps to their feet, gets all the sheep together again, and starts the small journey to Bethlehem, where Mary, and Joseph, and the Lord Jesus Christ are awaiting your visit.
" About that time Caesar Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Empire. This was the first census when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone had to travel to his own ancestral hometown to be accounted for. So Joseph went from the Galilean town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem in Judah, David's town, for the census. As a descendant of David, he had to go there. He went with Mary, his fiance, who was pregnant. While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room in the hotel.There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God's angel stood among them and God's glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, "Don't be afraid. I'm here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David's town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you're to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger." At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God's praises:Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please him.As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the sheepherders talked it over. Let's get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us.They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger.Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child.All who heard the sheepherders were impressed.Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself.The sheepherders returned and let loose, glorifying and praising God for everything they had heard and seen. It turned out exactly the way they'd been told! "

-I wrote this think in about the shepherds. I always think of the shepherds every Christmas season. What was it like out there? It must have been awesome to be the first ones to find out that the Messiah has been born! As Mark Lowery says " I love angels, can't keep secrets long enough."
