“Then the Lord appeared to Solomon at night and said to him, ‘I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place. For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that My name may be there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.’” (2 Chronicles 7:12-16 NASB1995)
In the Old Testament, the temple of God was built by human hands, made out of physical materials. But in the New Testament, under the New Covenant God has with his people Israel (Jew and Gentile by faith in Jesus Christ, his church), the temple of God is our bodies, the bodies of us who have trusted in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of our lives. We, the people of God, are now his holy temple, with human beings as its stones, and with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone and the head of his church.
God does not dwell in buildings made by human hands. So no earthly temple, no building called “church” is “God’s house.” When we enter into a building called “church” we are not entering into the house of God, and we are not standing on holy ground. And our Lord’s sanctuary is not in any building built by human hands. The church, the temple of God, is the people of God who have died with Christ to sin, and who are now walking in obedience to his commands in holy living, in the power of God, by his grace.
So, “the church” is not a physical place you go to on Saturdays or Sundays. The church is us, the people of God by God-gifted and God-persuaded faith in Jesus Christ. And we can gather together at any appropriate location on any day of the week, at any time of day or night. And it doesn’t have to be a physical location or gathering. We can gather together on the internet, or via texting, or via phone calls or video chats or emails. The point is that we are gathering together to minister God’s love and grace to one another.
But God’s house, which is our bodies, is still a house of sacrifice. For we are to give ourselves to God as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to him, which is our acceptable worship of God. And we are no longer to be conformed to the ways of this sinful world, but we are to be transformed in heart and mind of the Spirit to become followers of Jesus Christ whose lives are committed to serving the Lord in walks of obedience to his commands, and to no longer be those who make sin their practice. For we are now God’s temple.
[Matthew 21:12-13; John 2:13-17; Acts 2:42-47; Acts 5:27-32; Romans 12:1-8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31; 1 Corinthians 14:1-5; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18; Galatians 6:1; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:1-32; Ephesians 5:15-21; Ephesians 6:10-20; Philippians 2:1-8; Philippians 3:18-19; Colossians 3:12-16; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:13; Hebrews 10:23-25; James 5:19-20]
And, as God’s holy people, we are to be open and prepared that God is going to allow us to go through trials and tribulations to test our faith to make certain that it is genuine, of God, and not of the flesh. So he may take us through all kinds of storms and trials and persecutions and sufferings in order to humble us and to conform us to his likeness. And while we are going through these trials we should be looking to God to guide us through them, and to show us his will, and to teach us what we need to learn.
Sometimes he takes us through trials and tribulations because we have wandered from our pure devotion to the Lord, and we have fallen from what he requires of us in the way of thought and deed, and we have become more worldly, and so the trials help to bring us back to the place of repentance and renewed faith in walks of obedience to our Lord. And so we need those trials to nudge us and to encourage us to get back on track and to surrender our lives again to following the Lord according to his plan for our lives.
For the “house” that God has chosen and consecrated, that His name may be there forever, and where His eyes and His heart will be there perpetually, is us, the people of God who have denied self, who are putting sin to death daily, by the Spirit, and who are walking in obedience to our Lord’s commands, in practice, by the grace of God, in his power. And we are to keep his commands which are written down for us in the New Testament under the New Covenant. And we are not to stray from them.

Holy Spirit, come within us.
Cleanse our hearts,
and from sin free us.
Make us holy vessels fit
for service to the King.
Fill us with Your love and power.
Anoint us within this hour
To be living witnesses
For Jesus Christ, our King.
Our praise to Him bring.
Father God, our heart’s desire,
Come and speak to us in power.
Revive our hearts to obey You;
Live for You always.
May we love and serve You only,
Walking with You;
Not a phony.
May we always tell the truth,
And show integrity.
Your true servants be.
Jesus, Savior, sanctify us.
Purify our hearts within us;
Be transformed into Your likeness,
Holy unto You.
May we always listen to You
Speaking Your words
Now within us.
May we heed Your counsel to us;
Follow You today.
Do all that You say.
