He will pay attention to the prayer of the destitute and will not despise their prayer. Psalm 102:17 CSB

To be destitute means existing without the essentials for daily living, such as food or shelter. When you live in this kind of desperation, God isn’t embarrassed by your situation, and He won’t pretend He doesn’t know you. He doesn’t send a message telling you to quit bothering Him. Psalm 102 says God pays attention when you cry out for help. He won’t act like your prayers annoy Him.

David wrote this psalm as one who was suffering and facing trouble. David frequently found himself in troubling situations, and his writings serve as reminders for those facing difficulties to check in with the God who wouldn’t turn them away. David understood from firsthand experience that God comes close to those facing trouble.

You can be encouraged in the truth that you never have to fight to have God pay attention to you. He has had His attentive eyes on you from your beginning. You can be certain that the outcome of every bad situation can be a closer friendship with the God who can bring you through it.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, when I struggle and have less than I need, remind me that You remain close and will not abandon me when I need help the most. You stand with me when others find places to hide. You care when others believe I’m getting what I deserve.
