A Leader Worth Following

Remember me, my God, for good, [according to] all that I have done for this people. Nehemiah 5:19 NKJV

Nehemiah took care of his people. He trusted God for his security when his enemies slandered his name and plotted against his life. He honored God by carefully checking family records to make sure the priests assigned to minister were spiritually qualified. He stood up for his people when bureaucrats mortgaged them to the hilt. He refused the privileges of his position because his workers were bearing the cost. Going to bat for his people like that earned their trust and dedication to the work they were doing.

By keeping his focus on the Lord, his true leader, Nehemiah avoided the pitfalls of self-serving leadership—expedience, compromise, greed for power. God gave him a job, a hard one, and he leaned hard into God to get it done. More than once, he asked God to remember him favorably for all he had done for God’s people.

What made Nehemiah a leader worth following? His dedication to God, which is the model for all effective leaders. God both confronts His children and empowers them, making His expectations clear and helping them grow in faith. When we lead ourselves and others as God leads us, we clear the way for greater success on every level.

Prayer: Lord Go, I will follow You, today and every day. I know You will guide me as I strive to lead like You do.
