What I am wondering is..........if I confess my sins to Jesus in prayer and repent from my sins (which to my understanding is to do my very best to never repeat these same mistakes) he will not only forgive me but forget them. I read something about Jesus taking our sins and moving them from as far the east is to the west??? So am I right to think that my sins are between me and Jesus. He won't hold them against me in the afterlife? Or shame me with them? So I can move on with my life with a clean slate so to speak? Thank you for any help out there.

Ms. SallyS,

You are right with your thoughts of a relationship with Jesus Christ. I think that you have hit on some basic key truths that many seek for a long time to understand.

My hope and prayer for you is that, some point in your life you will say them with conviction.

Since you are obviously new to TJ, I will say this, you are in a good place for answers but, nothing is more important that you reading God's word for yourself and for you to learn what is good on your own.

Let me say the same thing you said and let you compare.
Again it is your decision not mine that counts, this is what Scripture tells me:

  • Go to Romans 10: 8-13. Read this until you understand it. You must do something like this in order to be "Born-Again and saved.
  • Jesus died on the cross for the sins of the world. That means He died one time for all sins and for everyone born and yet to be born.
  • And God (Jesus Christ) said that He would look at our sins no more.
  • You were born forgiven. This is only a part of God's grace to you, what He calls a gift. And if it is a gift, it is free.
  • But your salvation is another matter and comes by way of another free gift of Grace.
  • What one does with this forgiveness is a matter of choice and not all that are forgiven will be saved, because they don't choose.
  • Go back to Romans 10:8-13, you not only must by faith believe that Jesus died for your sins but you must believe in His resurrection.
  • St. Paul said(paraphrasing): That if we don't not believe in the resurrection, then the cross was for nothing and we will still die in our sins andwe are to be pitied of all men.
  • It is the believing in and the recieving of Jesus Christ's resurrected life that saves.
  • One of God's greatest miracles, by asking Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, to come in, He will live in you and give you salvation and eternal life. And here is one of the greatest parts of God's Grace, once He comes in, He said that he would never leave you, no matter what!
So, I would tell someone,if you have never done it, then do something like this in prayer:

Dear Lord Jesus,
I know that I am imperfect and therefore a sinful person in your eyes.
I thank you for dieing on the cross for all my sins.
With out you I can do nothing.
So, I ask that you come and live inside me from this day forward, giving me eternal life and teaching me how to do your will.
Amen

Any time someone believes and prays something similar to this prayer, then they are "Born -Again" and become a child of God for all eternity!

Thank you for responding to my post. Yes I do have alot to learn. I read the scriptures you talked about and I thank you again. I am coming from a place of despair and guilt I guess. I have felt this way for a long time and when I found Jesus it seemed to be the only thing that made me feel better. A way to be hopefull I suppose. Thank you for your time. I hope you have a great evening.

Precious sister

Please do not embrace doubt...when you come to Jesus.

The bible says..."as far as the East is from the West.........(thats eternal) so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
Ps 103:12

God has cast your sin into the deepest sea......And established a notice which reads......."No fishing"

You are a new creation in Jesus, old things are gone......the new has come........In Jesus...2Cor 5:17

Rejoice and be glad.....that you and I now belong to Jesus

what wonderful responses to a very commonly asked question , even as a christian for years we can all recall our failings .
i see my failings as rubbish , and if i throw the rubbish out , i certainly wouldnt go and get it back ..this helps me to remember that no no way would Jesus give them back to me once id given them to him .

Welcome to TalkJesus, SallyS. Right now, it is natural for you to view relationship with God through the lens of the world. As you grow spiritually, you'll look at it through a different lens and see His love much more clearly.

Thank you everyone. I like the idea of throwing the rubish out. That helped. So for every sin you confess to Jesus he just throws it out with the rubish and puts it in the bottom of the sea. That makes me feel like I can move on. I can't change the past but I can have a better future with Jesus as a part of it.

So for every sin you confess

I would caution on the "every sin " approach.
There will be those that disagree, but as a imperfect human it is literally impossible to remember or be aware of every sin you commit, let alone ask forgiveness for each.

What about the ones that you are not aware of?
You could go to God every day and just asked for forgiveness, but what about the days, weeks or even months that go by for some, are they not forgiven during this absence of daily repentance? Hardly not!

Asking for forgiveness for each sin, forgetting sins, not doing this action for days on end, can all lead to untruth or bondage.
The bondage is, and this does happen, I have failed to repent and I
am therefore not saved.

As a Christian, if there is sin in your life, you know that the Holy Spirit is convicting you of it and you are already working on allowing Him to work on that through you, right?

Any decision you want to make, any theology that you want to follow, if the outcome can lead to a negative, it probably will. This can't be from God because of His perfect will and nature; it is impossible for a negative to be from Him.

If you want to do something perfectly, try to just daily be thanking Jesus Christ for what He has already done on the cross for you.

Jesus died one time for ALL and for ALL sins, then He sat down.
Unlike the old Levitical Priest that never sat down in the Temple because ther job was never finished, year after year. The blood of Bulls and Goats could only cover for sin and had to be repeated every year on the day of "Atonement.

Jesus took away sins for ever, God said that "He would look at our sins no more".

Any person that is going to God everyday for forgiveness is one thing, but, if they are being held in bondage to that, this is something totally different.

This is what the Bible and the Holy Spirit speaks to me, of course you have to decide for your self.
