Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God [is] faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear [it]. 1 Corinthians 10:12-13
In today's passage, Paul sends the church in Corinth a reminder about how easy it is to trust in self and end up falling into sin. This was the blight of God's people in the old covenant. They had a taste of God, but "just experiencing God's wonder and grace didn't seem to mean much--most of them were defeated by temptation during the hard times in the desert, and God was not pleased" (1 Corinthians 10:5). They trusted in themselves and believed they were fine.
Today is Labor Day--the day America celebrates the laborer and all of his/her contributions. Enjoy the day off, but don't get too caught up in the spirit of the holiday. You're just as susceptible to fall as Israel was.
Forget about patting yourself on the back or self-confidence. Both are traps. Cultivate god-confidence. How? Seek God during hard times. Trust Him to come through for you. Seek less pleasure and comfort, in favor of obedience and joy in the Lord.
Prayer: Father, empower me to walk in the Spirit when times get tough so that my trust in You increases. Help me to see with spiritual eyes so I can always stay the course.
