"For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. "No one takes it away from Me, but from Myself, I lay it down. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father." John 10:17-18 LSB
We can imagine that the devil believed he had achieved an overwhelming victory when Jesus died at the hands of the Jewish and Roman authorities who condemned Him, sentenced Him, and executed Him on a wooden cross.
Yet Jesus’ death was anything but a defeat. In the above scripture passage, Jesus plainly stated that no one—not even the most powerful worldly entities of the time—had any authority over Him. He would die willingly, and His willingness to die on a cross and then be raised from the dead would clearly demonstrate His own power and authority.
At the time, many—including Jesus’ own followers—saw His death as defeat for Him. But it was instead the victory He had come to declare over Satan and his works of evil.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You died at the hands of both the Jews and the Gentiles, but You died willingly—for me. Your death and resurrection would give me and others victory over sin and death and would secure an eternity in heaven with You. Thank You for what You did for me.
