Does anyone else feel ackward or weird whenever they speak to God? How do you get rid of it?

You typically feel aukward or wierd when you are speaking to someone you dont really know that well (as in how they will percieve you). You can only get rid of it by getting to know the person better, until you feel more comfortable around them. Sooo... you need to spend more time in prayer with God, more time in His word, so as to understand Him more.... meditate on His word, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you into a closer relationship, so that you will feel that closeness you desire.

Awkward is usually because of lack of experience, or an unknowing of the result. The only way to become confident is through doing what you feel like you are not able to do.

Let all of the word of God show who He is. He can appear severe or intimidating sometimes, but my suggestion is to start with the Gospels, Psalms and Proverbs to get an overall view of who He is. Remember that God is big enough to handle the hard questions you may have. He is big enough for you to be honest with Him. Don't try to cover up anything in order for Him to see you as "good".

Praying to God should be more like a conversation you have with a friend. Even though our faith is not based on emotion, that conversation many times will bring you to tears, or laughter...sometimes both, and sometimes at the same time.

Psa 62:5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
Psa 62:6 He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.
Psa 62:7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.
Psa 62:8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

There are different kinds of prayer..

Take the Lord's Prayer

Mat 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Psa 7:17 I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.

Psa_33:2 Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.

Psa_135:3 Praise the LORD; for the LORD is good: sing praises unto his name; for it is pleasant.

Psa_146:1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul.
Psa_146:2 While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being.

Praise, honor and glory to God the Father. Sing to the Lord, give Him thanks and praise. This sometimes looks like a party, and sometimes looks like a quiet worship when you choose to worship and praise Him even if things are not quite right with your world.

Mat 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Mat_26:42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

Psa_25:5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.

Psa_27:11 Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.

Psa_31:3 For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me.

Psa_43:3 O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.

This is where the prayer is said that we want His will and way to guide us through life. Trusting Him that He will work His will into us when we ask. His kingdom come in our own life.

It is also a time where intercessory prayer (praying for the needs of others) is asked. Praying for God's will is so much more than voicing the phrase "Your will be done, God", it is when we go to the scriptures and find out what God's will is for the situation. Praying that in all things there be understanding, cooperation, wisdom, grace, mercy, peace, and that all things will work together for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

There is nothing wrong with saying to God that you do not like the situation you are in. He expects us to worship Him in spirit and in truth. Which means being honest with Him, giving Him all your problems and then He will give you peace that passes understanding. Before you know it, you will be getting the experience that He really does do what He has promised.

Mat 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread.
Mat 6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
Mat 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

We ask Him to provide for our needs, to give opportunities for physical things that we need, but more so the ability to endure when temptations come along. God does not stop temptations, but the prayer here is for Him to keep us from falling into them. But if we do fall into temptations (as all humans do from time to time) the prayer is then for Him to deliver us out of the pit as we confess those sins to Him he forgives us as we forgive others who confess theirs to us.

Then Jesus' example of prayer ends with more praise of God, not only for what He is doing now, but also for the future.

Its normal for a young person to feel awkward when launching out in a new direction; growing up is in itself a new (and scary) direction. Nothing abnormal.

I (usually) don't feel awkward talking to God anymore but I do remember when I did. There are some exceptions which I will get to in a minute. :embarasse I am happy to share with you how I personally left the awkwardness behind. It was something I saw a pastor say: "Pray without ceasing". I may not have exactly interpreted that like most people but here goes... When we are saved, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us. What this meant to me is: I am never alone again. I take him wherever I go. Government tries very hard to take God out of our schools but here I am taking him to school with me each and every day which is something all of us Christian kids do. So, they might be able to accomplish their goal when everyone goes home but we bring him back to school with us and they will never keep him out. So, I came to see this more clearly. He is always in the room with me. What is praying really? It is simply talking with him. This is a very natural thing to do actually. Talk with him as a friend beside you all day long. Maybe others around us don't see this is happening but it is my goal that they should see Christ in me. Besides becoming incredibly closer with him it also has other benefits. When temptation comes, he is right there beside me too! When I am on a date, he comes with us. Knowing this keeps me from straying into things I shouldn't. When situations come up where a lie might keep me out of trouble I know he is there too keeping a keen interest in the things I am saying. This is where "praying without ceasing" has brought me. I sort of imagine other people breaking away from their daily routine to have a prayer session when they follow the "pray without ceasing" thing. Or maybe some use it as a "never give up" kind of thing. I might be completely weird in my interpretation.

As for those exceptions when I do still feel awkward in talking to him... These are the times when I try to do things under my own power instead of relying on his... times when I get conceited or proud of myself... and of course the times when he gives me opportunities to serve him and I don't see that until two days later. When I feel like I don't measure up or have let him down, then I feel so awkward. But I also know that he knows all my insecurities, my flaws, my mistakes, my wrong desires, etc. Nothing at all is hidden from him and yet he accepts and loves me anyway! When I fall he picks me up, dusts me off and send me back in for round 2 (or 3, or 4, or 5...). He is always there and always faithful and loving.

Praying is indeed a very natural thing to do and you don't have to utter a sound to do it. I pray with my mouth closed quite often; just me and my awesome Lord!
