Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. Luke 21:36 KJV
Jesus’ words must have stunned His followers. Just days after His “triumphal entry” into Jerusalem, as the disciples enthused over the beauty of the temple, Jesus declared, “The time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down” (Luke 21:6 NIV).
Understandably, the disciples wanted to know when that would happen. What followed was Jesus’ discourse that interwove both near—and long-term prophecies, of the destruction of Jerusalem and of the end of time. An explanation would require books, not single devotional—but Jesus’ concluding instruction, captured in today’s scripture, is our focus now.
Today is the National Day of Prayer in the United States, a perfect time to refresh our commitment to “be always on the watch, and pray.” It’s one thing to read about prayer, to think about prayer, or to say, “I need to pray.” It’s another thing-the vital thing—to pray. As soon as you finish this entry, use the prayer starter below as an entryway into God’s presence. He welcomes you to His “throne of grace” (Hebrews 4:16), so don’t hesitate to meet Him there.
Prayer: Lord God, thank You for hearing my prayers. Today, I need to discuss…
