But by the cross of Jesus stood His mother, His mother’s sister, Mary the [wife] of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. John 19:25 AMPC
Taking heart should be contagious. When you see someone with a belief in God’s goodness that changes everything about them, it’s inspirational. It can position you to make the same choice. Friends can be an important part of personal encouragement.
Three women stood in view of a cross made of crude timbers. Jesus-who taught in the synagogue, performed miracle after miracle, and gave wisdom a new face—was dying. His hands fastened to splintered wood, His feet similarly held in place, and His body struggled to bear His own weight so He could catch a breath. They listened in as He forgave, they heard the ridicule of the criminals also dying on that hill. These women watched Jesus bow His head as His human life ended.
They would need each other in those moments and in the days that followed. Most of the disciples, overcome with grief and disappointment, stayed away. But these women were strengthened by the presence of other believers and in knowing that Jesus truly meant something more than what they had witnessed on that hill.
The friends you keep can be crucial in helping you take heart when some say doing so is a choice that doesn’t make sense.
Prayer: Send me good friends, God. I need to remember they can help me take heart or encourage something less honorable.
