But He said, "More than that, blessed [are] those who hear the word of God and keep it!" Luke 11:28 NKJV
Money, it is said, makes the world go round. But a good argument can also be made for connections.
Successful people make sure their relatives are well provided for. Kings hand down the throne to their own offspring. Business leaders make sure their families have jobs (or simply cash). Influential people engineer opportunities for their spouses, siblings, and kids. If you’re “in,” life is good.
It’s nice to know that Jesus takes an entirely different approach.
As he was speaking, a woman in the crowd called out, “God bless your mother—the womb from which you came, and the breasts that nursed you!”
Jesus replied, “But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice. (Luke 11:27-28)
What the woman said was true. Mary herself, after learning she would give birth to the Messiah, praised God by saying, “For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.” (Luke 1:48)
But Jesus’ response to that enthusiastic follower—the words of today’s scripture—broadened the opportunity for blessing. You don’t have to be Jesus’ flesh-and-blood kin to enjoy God’s favor. Just listen for His voice and apply His Word to your life. No Special connections are needed. Anyone can be blessed.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, it’s so nice to know that You welcome everyone. I don’t have to be “anyone special” to be blessed. I just need to follow You.
