Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 1 Samuel 17:45 NKJV
Today’s Bible reading has always been a favorite…for good reason! Imagine David leaving his sheep and going to check on the welfare of his brothers (at his dad’s request), only to hear Goliath bellow out his challenge for the eightieth time (1 Samuel 17:16) in defiance of the Lord God of Israel.
Being a youth of courage (1 Samuel 17:34-37) and faith (1 Samuel 17:17; 17:45, and more). David couldn’t stand there and listen to his overstuffed Philistine curse what David esteemed the most. He was a man of action and—incredible as it must, have seemed—volunteered to take on the brute.
At first, Goliath was amused at David’s boldness. Then he became angry and cursed him. Finally,, Goliath was “very must astonished when David hit him with a stone” because “such a thing had never entered his head before” (Dean Rivers, Conundrums, 1921).
David’s response to Goliath is a challenge to every man who follows the Lord today.
Prayer: Lord, You want me to be a man of faith, courage, and action. When faced with trials and temptations, may I be all three.
