Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 2 Timothy 3:112-14 ESV
Every generation of humanity has suffered hard, even terrible, times. Wars, famines, plagues, and spiritual darkness have afflicted people for millennia. Whatever darkness we face today is nothing new. And yet it really seems that modern society is crumbling fast.
For those of us in the United States, where the Christian faith has been generally respected if not universally accepted, opposition is increasing noticeably. And that’s something both Jesus (in John 15:20) and the apostle Paul (in today’s scripture) promised. You can never accuse God of painting too rosy a picture for those who follow Him.
With this knowledge, we can prepare ourselves for the resistance of “evil people” who “go on from bad to worse.” How? By continuing to firmly believe what we know about God and Jesus, sin and salvation. We know these things by our careful study of scripture, which Paul went on to describe as “breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).
Can you commit to an extra ten minutes in the Word today?
Prayer: Father, guide me in Your truth so I can stand against this world’s opposition.
