Be Thou My Vision O' LORD of My Heart, Violin & Harb

@PloughBoy

Greetings and thank you for sharing this with us.

a little history behind the song:

According to mythology, when St. Patrick was a missionary in Ireland in the 5th century, King Logaire of Tara decreed that no one was allowed to light any fires until a pagan festival was begun by the lighting of a fire on Slane Hill. In a move of defiance against this pagan ritual, St. Patrick did light a fire, and, rather than execute him, the king was so impressed by his devotion that he let Patrick continue his missionary work. Three centuries later, a monk named Dallan Forgaill wrote the Irish poem, “Rop tú mo Baile” ("Be Thou my Vision), to remember and honor the faith of St. Patrick. Forgaill was martyred by pirates, but his poetry lived on as a part of the Irish monastic tradition for centuries until, in the early 20th century, Mary Elizabeth Byrne translated the poem into English, and in 1912, Eleanor Hull versified the text into what is now a well-loved hymn and prayer that at every moment of our lives, God would be our vision above all else.

Be Thou My Vision
translated by Mary E Byrne

1 Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
naught be all else to me, save that thou art.
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

2 Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word;
I ever with thee, and thou with me, Lord.
Born of thy love, thy child may I be,
thou in me dwelling and I one with thee.

3 Be thou my buckler, my sword for the fight.
Be thou my dignity, thou my delight,
thou my soul’s shelter, thou my high tow’r.
Raise thou me heav’nward, O Pow’r of my pow’r.

4 Riches I heed not, nor vain empty praise;
thou mine inheritance, now and always.
Thou and thou only, first in my heart,
Ruler of heaven, my treasure thou art.

5 *True Light of heaven, when vict’ry is won
may I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heav’n’s Sun!
Heart of my heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

*Alternate phrase: “High King”

The meaning of 'Be Thou My Vision'
- a devotional guide to the bible references in the lyrics of the song.

If you are involved in leading worship you may find the following useful for introducing the hymn before congregational singing:-

Each verse of this hymn alludes to biblical passages:-

With "Be Thou My Vision" we may think of the Apostle Paul's testimony in Philippians 3:8 of losing everything for the sake of Christ.

The line "Waking or sleeping", brings to mind Psalm 139 and verse 18 "When I wake up, I am still with you" and speaks of the ommipresent nature of God (the Lord is always present with us).

"Be Thou My Wisdom" - scripture personifies Wisdom in the Book of Proverbs -

Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,
she raises her voice in the public square.

Proverbs 1:20 (NIV)

We read later in this chapter (verse 28) that it the Lord that is calling out. God himself is wisdom, and we can ask to receive this wisdom into our hearts as we sing the lines of this hymn.

"Be Thou my breast-plate..sword..armour" - this recalls the armour of God passage found in Ephesians 6:13-17 - and St Paul's prayer for protection against Satan's schemes.

Jesus teaches that " your heart will always be where your riches are" (Luke 12:34, GNT) and the forth stanza of "Be Thou My Vision" is a prayer to be single-minded in placing the "King of Heaven" at the centre of life (and not materialism or recognition for the sake of it).

"But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings" (Malachi 4:2) - our prayer remains the same "whatever befall" - that Christ, the light of Heaven, is always our vision, the centre of our life.

I knew the tune. Had never heard the words to this though. Beautiful and true.
