Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Galatians 5:1 NKJV

Why the asterisk with this devotional’s title? Because that “be yourself” phrase requires some explanation.

God made billions of human beings, each with similarities, yet no two exactly alike. Everyone has specific interests and abilities that contribute to God’s plan, so you should “be yourself.” You are free in Christ to become the very best you you can be.

But about that asterisk…Though our freedom is broad, it does have limits. The apostle Paul, who wrote today’s scripture, also described believers as slaves to obedience and righteousness (Romans 6:16, 18).

Christians are not bound by the Old Testament’s ceremonial and civil rules—Galatians 5 argues that no believer should try to supplement faith in Jesus with circumcision. But God’s moral laws do still apply…hence the “slavery” of Romans 6.

Within Christianity, “be yourself” means you can choose to be a businessman, an artist, a deep-se diver—whatever interests you and honors God—without anyone’s interference. But you can’t steal from your neighbor, either his money or his wife.

Imagine yourself as a did on a vast, incredible playground. You’re free to do whatever you please…just don’t jump the fence. It’s dangerous outside.

Prayer: Lord, I’m thankful for the freedom and opportunity You offer. Help me to be my best self, within Your will.

Sacrifice and offering you do not desire, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required. Then I said, "Here I am; in the scroll of the book it is written of me. I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart."
(Psalms 40:6-8 NRSV)
