Beware of the fungus among us.
Matthew 16:5-12
5 And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. 6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread. 8 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? 9 Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 10 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? 12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
Jesus warned the disciples to beware of the leaven or yeast of the religious leaders. Yeast according to Webster’s dictionary is a fungi or fungus. Jesus was calling the teachings of the religious leaders a fungus.
1Corinthians 5:6-8
6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? 7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: 8 therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Paul’s warning is to be on guard, even a little or small amount of yeast will infect the whole.
Today’s Christianity offers a wide variety of beliefs that have conflicting and contrary teachings. This is evidence of what Paul stated in 1Cor. 5:6-8, the adding of yeast compromises the Gospel of Jesus Christ. What is the yeast of the Pharisees? The Pharisee’s yeast are the teachings and traditions of man.
Matthew 15:1-9
1 Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to interview Jesus. 2 “Why do your disciples disobey our age-old traditions?” they demanded. “They ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat.”
3 Jesus replied, “And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God? 4 For instance, God says, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.’* 5 But you say, ‘You don’t need to honor your parents by caring for their needs if you give the money to God instead.’ 6 And so, by your own tradition, you nullify the direct commandment of God. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was prophesying about you when he said,
8 ‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far away.
9 Their worship is a farce,
for they replace God’s commands with their own man-made teachings.’* ”
Standing back and looking at the Christian religion and all it’s beliefs and teachings as a whole, I would say it is infected with a fungus, a fungus called the yeast of the Pharisees.
So then, how do we fix it? We don’t, man has already made a mess of it. Then how do we get out of this mess? By following the Holy Spirit and not the traditions of man.
John 16:13-15
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not be presenting his own ideas; he will be telling you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by revealing to you whatever he receives from me. 15 All that the Father has is mine; this is what I mean when I say that the Spirit will reveal to you whatever he receives from me.
Jesus said if we want to be His disciples, that we MUST deny ourselves and take up our cross daily. There is no other way. The Holy Spirit is here to help us do just that, become disciples of Christ. Let’s decide today to heed Jesus’ warning and stop following the opinions, knowledge and traditions of man and from here on out, follow the Holy Spirit’s prompting and become partakers of the PURE unleavened bread, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
