Then Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here, please, for the LORD has sent me on to Bethel." But Elisha said, "[As] the LORD lives, and [as] your soul lives, I will not leave you!" So they went down to Bethel. 2 Kings 2:2 NKJV
Even after Elijah ordered him to stay behind, Elisha remained faithful to his master and chose to travel with him into the unknown on Elijah’s last day on earth. He faced the uncertainty of the moment and received a rich blessing and ministry because he took the harder path of faithfulness. As he watched Elijah ascend to heaven, he received a double portion of his spirit, which he used to guide, defend, and bless God’s people in the coming years.
Standing by someone in a time of loss or uncertainty can feel disruptive and devastating. Yet, as you stand with those who mourn or who stand on the brink of a major change, you will find blessings and even God’s life in those moments. You may gain wisdom and insight that would have come to you in no other way—and which prepares you to minister to others in deeper ways.
As you consider your relationships today, take special note of those going through a transition. Are there ways you can show up and remain with them? Can you help them endure their trial and uncertainty until the end?
Prayer: Lord, help me to see those in need of my presence and comfort today.
