Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, so our land will be filled with his glory. Unfailing love and truth have met together. Righteousness and peace have kissed! Truth springs up from the earth, and righteousness smiles down from heaven. Psalm 85:9-11 NLT
Do you remember last Friday’s opening lines? When you read the Old Testament, it’s smart to assume that the writers frequently allude to, indirectly quote, or directly quote from the books of Moses. That’s the case again in today’s psalm reading.
In this psalm, the composers repeatedly allude to the most famous ancient Hebrew blessing. This threefold blessing is found in Numbers 6:24-26. Each blessing is from the happy Lord looking upon His godly people here on earth. What’s more, each blessing produces tangible results for those people.
How happy is the Lord? First, He sends the blessings of salvation, including protection. Second, He smiles on His godly people and sends gracious provisions to meet all their needs. Third, He shows His favor and gives His people shalom (peace).
The poetic key verses quoted above reiterate each aspect of the Jewish people’s favorite blessing. Now, imagine hearing the Lord speak it over you! Better yet, why not share it with someone else today?
Prayer: Unvarying God, You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Your blessings never cease. May I become a godlier man with each passing day.
