buddy list

Could anyone tell me what the "buddy list" is for? I have added several people to my buddy list, but nothing happens. I thought it might show me when they came online or something, but I haven't seen that.

I'm clueless!

my reasoning with it is it is an address book basically for this site as if you were writing out a PM to some one and you wanted to pu twho it was goign to greater ease or somethgin i think. but i am not sure..
