Then He said to them, "The harvest truly [is] great, but the laborers [are] few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Luke 10:2 NKJV

Jesus said these words to seventy-two disciples He’d commissioned to teach and heal. Separate from the Twelve, this group went out in pairs to places Jesus Himself would soon visit.

Luke 10:2 is often used to stir Christians to greater concern for the lost. That’s appropriate, since all of us could probably do more to share the gospel.

Maybe this topic creates stress or guilt in our hearts. If so, reread the first four words of the verse: The harvest is plentiful. Though Jesus’ disciples would encounter apathy and opposition, they would also find people who welcomed their message. Many people were ready to hear the good news. That’s true in our day too.

We can’t let this dark world depress or irritate us and keep us from reflecting Jesus’ light to our unsaved family, friends, and neighbors. Jesus hasn’t yet returned because God “is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). As we see from the parable of the vineyard workers (Matthew 20:1-16) and the account of a thief crucified beside Jesus (Luke 23:39-43), God will save people at literally the final hour.

Let’s pray for workers in God’s harvest---and be sure we’re part of the answer.

Prayer: Jesus, use me to draw many to Yourself.

We are sowers, the harvest hasn’t come yet

Dear Brother,
Care to extrapolate on that. :)

Where do you think the kingdom of heaven is? Is it in the clouds, in space, on other planets, or is the kingdom of heaven inside each person filled with the Holy Spirit? Or is it in all of the above? The harvest comes out of the myriad of souls that are not in the kingdom of heaven, but have been drawn into it.

The word /gospel is the seed. It is still being sown.
We don’t harvest,Christ does. We let the tares and wheat grow together. We would uproot everything. Christ is Lord of the harvest. In his own due time.

Dear Brother,
So, you believe this devotional goes against the verse in Luke 10:2 and what Jesus told the 70?
If so, care to explain how it does that?

At the time Jesus said that, there were no laborers at all.
Jesus sent the 70 ahead of him, sowing ,not reaping. He came along later to hopefully reap.
It was a microcosm of what will happen when Christ returns.
We are to sow the gospel, he will reap when he comes.

It doesn’t go against at all.
It’s just that the cart was put before the horse in the devotional.
But I may be totally wrong. But don’t think so. But could be. But don’t think so. You think so?

Dear Brother,
If the verse were part of parable, it could be argued on the meaning. However, in this verse and a copy of it can be found in Matthew as well, Jesus was talking specifically to His disciples, which in truth was telling that even the 70 that He was at this time sending out to this task, could use more laborers/workers! So, the title of the devotional is actually appropriate when you think on the meaning of this verse and the need for more laborers. :)

In this day and age, you would think of the amount of those professing to be believers in Jesus Christ, would be sufficient to this same task Jesus spoke of so many years ago, and yet still the laborers are few!!! :(

I do believe you are like me when initially I read this devotional. It's the part that reads "The harvest is plentiful." that can be misleading, when you don't realize that it is not the author of the devotional saying this, but Jesus when in the NKJV it says "The harvest truly [is] great..."! All the author is doing is bringing attention that the work being done, then needs to continue on in this day, which is the spreading of the Gospel! Who is being Harvested is but those who accept the truth of the Gospel and believe in our Lord & Savior Jesus! There is still work to be done. It's not Harvest time yet! :)

This can tie into many other things, but you have to keep in mind that this is but a snippet/devotional and hopefully in the case of this one, a motivator for the reader to keep spreading the Gospel! \o/

I hope this makes sense to you.
God bless.
