Then He said to them, "The harvest truly [is] great, but the laborers [are] few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Luke 10:2 NKJV
Jesus said these words to seventy-two disciples He’d commissioned to teach and heal. Separate from the Twelve, this group went out in pairs to places Jesus Himself would soon visit.
Luke 10:2 is often used to stir Christians to greater concern for the lost. That’s appropriate, since all of us could probably do more to share the gospel.
Maybe this topic creates stress or guilt in our hearts. If so, reread the first four words of the verse: The harvest is plentiful. Though Jesus’ disciples would encounter apathy and opposition, they would also find people who welcomed their message. Many people were ready to hear the good news. That’s true in our day too.
We can’t let this dark world depress or irritate us and keep us from reflecting Jesus’ light to our unsaved family, friends, and neighbors. Jesus hasn’t yet returned because God “is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). As we see from the parable of the vineyard workers (Matthew 20:1-16) and the account of a thief crucified beside Jesus (Luke 23:39-43), God will save people at literally the final hour.
Let’s pray for workers in God’s harvest---and be sure we’re part of the answer.
Prayer: Jesus, use me to draw many to Yourself.
