But what makes a great preacher?

Hey guys, my name is Josh.

When I encountered Jesus' teachings I found it strange that more people, who professed to be Christians, weren't sharing what Jesus taught.

Through what Jesus has already said, it has become much clearer why that is... But there is still an urgent need for us all to fulfil the great commission (Matt 28:19-20: 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.)

I would like to become a great preacher in God eyes, through serving him; how he wants me to. But what makes a great preacher?

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Welcome to TJ
What makes a good Pastor is to know for sure that is His Plan for you then Submit unto Him like no other.
Then He will train you in His way.

Hi josh. The job of a preacher is simply to reveal God. Biblical preaching is about building a bridge between the ancient text of the Bible and people's lives where they are.

First you need to know God's word inside out and to have your whole life centred around what he says. Then you need to know your audience - their situation, concerns and hopes - deeply. And be able to make the right connectionside between the two.

Simple right?

Hi Josh, I'm new to the community. Not sure if I'm doing this right. But I think the listener determines a great preacher. God's word is just that God's word. It need only to be expressed clearly and properly. My view of a preacher is one who professes God's word, and salvation through Jesus.

I bet a candy bar you did not watch the video
Yep no data for that but then again it does not take watching a video to address a question like that.

I have learned to protect my eyes and ears. I ask the Lord if this is something He wants me to read or hear.

Not to mention if God has a plan for one to preach He will direct your steps to a school AND place you in a ministry to SERVE as He continues to train you. Then He can trust you to preach what He Wants you to be preaching and NOT what people want to hear.

Any one can go preach and even get a license to do so BUT if its not where and what God had planned for you then in all truth you are walking outside His Will for you and The Anointing and Favor and moving of God simply will not be there.

Just because one feels like this or that is what they are supposed to be doing for God does not make it so.

Far to many people are so busy doing stuff for God that they never took the time to find out what He had planned for them to do. Sadly there is little to no reward in that.

Far to many so called preachers get caught up in giving what the people want or think they need.

They are people Pleaser's and are in Disobedience unto God.

Preacher Preacher scratch my ear and tell me what I want to hear.

Best to be called then just went.
Blessings @Dave M

A good preacher teaches the Word. The way its written...Gods Words, not the silly translations of man and not the way a man would prefer to read it.

Make sure you are part of a local church or body of believers who you answer to. That way you not only have access to teach and preach, but they watch over you and can correct you when needed. Plus, they will give you feedback if they believe you should be a preacher or teacher of the Bible. You want and need that. And, they will recognize if the Holy Spirit is in your teaching/preaching. (Acts 13:3) You should already be teaching a Bible class to have that desire to pursue it more.

Don't worry about being 'great'. You make sure you have been called to it. All are witnesses. Not all have been called to preach or teach the Bible. You will be more accountable to God for that which you teach.

If you do not have a tremendous drive in you to study the Bible, and know it in and out, then you are not called to preach or teach. If you do have it, then you do it. Search for a Bible college to go to. Many will say you don't need that, but I disagree. It not only affords you the time to study, but you have access to much knowledge and experience from others that you normally wouldn't have. Plus, the Bible degree itself will open more doors for you.

So, make sure you are called, and make sure you have something to say. Don't be like the messenger sent to David who wasn't sent. (2 Sam. 18:19-32)

It is the opposite of what "good preaching" should be. That video would be well accepted among Americans attracted to socialism, free money for people who don't like to work, free education for professional students who like living in college dorms, etc. They would love it until everyone had "enough" not to go out of their homes, the whole nation crumbling from destitution of none working for a living anymore. When the Treasury dries up the jobs would have already disappeared anyway. One need not have to experience poverty to appreciate prosperity, which is relative to many scenarios. Poverty to extreme is a curse, not a blessing, a great danger, having some dangers shared by the very wealthy.
Proverbs 30:7-9 (KJV)
7 Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:
8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:
9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

There is a homeless camp across town near an industrial park. Much help has been offered, but there is no perceptible change in their lives. They all stay dressed very poorly even though new clothes are piled on picnic benches. Being nicely dressed draws scorn for their community. The donated stuff gets returned to the stores, cash used for pot and drugs. They will not come out of their tents or boxes to let us minister, but will take food left on their tables. Any resellable cans are traded for other things. A Coleman camp stove with cans of fuel and lighters, cook pans, and food was donated by a little group from our church, but before the delegation left, a homeless man headed out with it to do the usual, get to the pawn shop. Residents can't dare leave their digs lest they return to find it all gone. They are trapped there, always having to leave someone home. People with criminal backgrounds are their "police", ruling them ruthlessly. A free health clinic was established close enough fo them to walk to, but they won't use it for fear of having to identify themselves. Those included mothers on drugs with children in the camp. Some are found and required to attend school, so the buses pick them up. We were glad they would receive hot meals there, until learning from teachers those kids won't accept free meals for fear they will be noticed as "one of those homeless". Teachers are letting them "steal" foods they put around to be found, like a bunch of sliders in a bag from a burger outlet. Nobody takes it all, but they are shared thrugh the day.

I've visited with several over the years, some former Teen Challenge whose stories run along the same theme. Got on drugs, got fired, then the utilities were cut off. Sold everything including the car, let the dogs and cats run off, then got an eviction notice. The city requires a water and sewer account to be maintained to live there. Still on drugs, they have little other choice. They've quickly gone from poor and of little help to anyone else, to too poor to help at all, to totally cursed to help themselves. They have become too bitter to give God another chance, so will not stay around gospel preaching.

Now if that's blessing to anyone reading, at least be thankful you have access to the internet. But preaching that's the route Jesus wants for anyone is absurdity. Rather than be overbearing in spirit to a fault, be poor in spirit, needing the Lord, so Jesus can make you spiritually rich.

Open the Bible and just start reading. If you do that often enough the Lord will help you come up with a sermon. Then when you get a chance to preach, be prepared for the Lord to say "That was for your benefit. I have something else to say to this church."

A great preacher must have a particular qualification few preachers have. If talking about a pastoral position, which involves preaching, then the first thing to be sure is in you is a shepherd's heart. Without that it's very unlikely to become a good preacher, or really stay a preacher with any congregation with any lasting success, regardless of how many college degrees you have attained. Not having that heart of deep, never-give-up love for every person you minister to, leads to the current alarming rate of preacher burn-out. Assuming your question doesn't have to do with a TV evangelistic ministry, I'll dwell on the above.

I agree, make sure you find a local church that emphasizes the gospel of Christ, the efficacy of His blood, and is very New Testament oriented. Right away meet the pastor(s), find out what volunteer positions need filling. Pray about the options, fasting. Ask the Lord which. He might direct you to volunteer for the one outreach few if any volunteer for. It might be nursing home worship and visitation. Ah, that one is challenging in the mind, but that's where a budding preacher will grow quickly. An even tougher task is ministering to rehab patients, many mad at God over their mishaps. "Why did God let that happen to me?" If you can stick with such ministries you might have a shepherd's heart. Proof it some more.

Help your pastor handle funerals and burials. Don't like children? Submit to a children's ministry anyway. If Jesus is in your heart, He can add love of children.

Hate to see someone in a wheelchair with missing limbs? Well, go find more. The VA supports respite care expenses for disabled vets. If you need the money to be involved, they pay a monthly allowance for helpers to enter in. If they want to pay you for spending time helping them, ask the Lord to be able to sit down with the vet and send that off as a donation to Wounded Warriors or some other vet program with a low admin cost. That builds esteem in them, and you.

A church pastor is looking for people going after the greatest rewards possible from Jesus when He returns. It's very good to want those above all else. Coveting the Lord's rewards can't possibly be evil.

In time, a denominational church might not be very wealthy, but would be willing to commit to further education of a pastoral hopeful if certifications of their denomination are expected. Few small churches require a pastor with degrees, not able to pay the salaries demanded. But some will pay for online courses, and in time support your advanced pursuits. Many lose such candidates who are often recruited by other churches, which reduces the opportunities for church-paid education. You might have to enter into a contract to work out the cost of educating you.

Many non-denominational churches are not so desirous of formal educations. They look more at spiritual qualifications. Preachers with high degrees are typically costly. A simple man of God might not "cost" them anything at all, but owe that pastor a living of the gospel. That person will not have to have a single diploma to satisfy that congregation which looks for the shepherd's heart first.

1 Corinthians 9:6-14 (KJV)
6 Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?
7 Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
8 Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?
9 For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?
10 Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.
11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
12 If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.
13 Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?

14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

Put less emphasis on qualifications required of men, but do the right thing to those who have committed their shepherd-heart lives to serve you.

If wanting to pursue a college degree, probably a better pursuit would be business management, seeing pastors face ever increasing financial challenges. Then let your denomination decide how much more they want in the area of qualifications. Increasingly more Bible college students are unable to find work in their field, at a time when thousands of churches close their doors every year due to failing finances and related issues.

Greetings Josh,

are you still with us? Lots of feedback you have received.

I'd say that your answer is in your wording.
It is not what makes a great preacher but Who makes a preacher great

Bless you ....><>

Hey guys I uploaded the wrong link, sorry!

Here is the right one -

What makes a great sermon?

Peace and Love
If God calls a person to preach, He wants THAT person..not somebody else...So if God calls YOU to preach, simply be YOU....The normal every day YOU. That makes a good preacher.

Knowing what the Bible says is not knowing the truth. Jesus said he was the way the "truth" and the life. Jesus said to "search the "scriptures" for in them you think you have eternal life, and it is they that testify of me". Scriptures point to the one who is the truth (Jesus). Keeping his word in you proofs that you love him, and in return, Jesus said he would love that person back by "manifesting" himself to you! Not until Jesus manifests himself to you will you know the truth. You can not preach or teach who you do not know. The Holy Spirit can not remind you of things you first did not know.

Knowing what the Bible says is only a "prerequisite" to knowing the truth.
