Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, [in whom] my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. Isaiah 42:1 KJV

Jesus spoke often of the importance for His followers of serving others. In Matthew 20:25-28, He told His followers that they were to be different from power-hungry authorities, that they were to lead by first being servants. He concluded this thought by telling them that they should follow His example: “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28).

Centuries before Jesus came to earth, the prophet Isaiah used the term “servant of the Lord” (Isaiah 42:1) to describe the coming Messiah. Later, the apostle Matthew wrote that Jesus had fulfilled the prophecy in Isaiah 42 (see Matthew 12:17-21). There’s no question that Isaiah’s Servant was Jesus Christ.

Indeed, Jesus came to earth to serve God and humanity by suffering, dying on a cross, and then rising from the dead. He served us in the most profound way possible, and now He calls us to serve others just as He served us. When we consider what He has done for us, our only response should be to say, “Yes, Lord. I will serve You by serving others.”

Prayer: Lord, help me to serve others as You have served me.
