Can’t Curse the Blessed

Then Balak said to Balaam, "What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and look, you have blessed [them] bountifully!" So he answered and said, "Must I not take heed to speak what the LORD has put in my mouth?" Numbers 23:11-12 NKJV

Balaam was a hired prophet, engaged by Balak to curse Israel and drive them from his territory. Balaam took the gig but soon found himself in a pickle: He could only say what God told him to say. Three times he attempted to curse Israel; three times God compelled him to speak blessing over them instead.

When even a mercenary, whose livelihood is based on getting the job done and getting paid, can’t go against God’s blessing, it’s safe to say God’s people are secure. Safe in Christ, we’re protected not from every hardship but from the ultimate adversity of separation from our Maker. He is with us and watching over us, and He will see us through anything or anyone that comes against us.

Furthermore, there’s a reminder for us about speaking God’s truth. Our future demands compliance with its views, but we can’t water down God’s Word. Love without truth isn’t love, and vice versa. When you’re loyal to God, He’s got your back.

Prayer: Lord God, Your truth and love are shaping me into the image of Jesus. Give me courage to share Your good news and not to back down from speaking Your truth with Your heart.
