Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

Good.. so peace means what?
Ceasing to retaliate?

Depends on the type of peace you are talking about. For instance the world's peace is deceptive, it is a lie. True peace or God's peace is a soothing contentment that come with being complete and having hope that is placed in God. It is a strong sense of your infinite value while surrounded by a world that tries to devalue everything. It is knowing that you are fulfilling the purpose for which you were created. It is a life where perfect love drives away fear. It is longing for when you can be in the presence of God while at the same time enjoying your life here. It is joy when everyone around you is persecuting you because you know the victory is guaranteed.

So persecution is good or is it only good when its for living innocent?
How do you know the difference between persecution for righteousness vs persecution for something you did wrong?

That's simple persecution for something we do wrong normally come after we've done something wrong.

Persecution will always make us stronger when we use the Spirit of God to endure and overcome it.

Even when facing the punishment for my past evil I was able to the strength of God to learn and grow. While there are consequences for our actions, God will turn the bad into good and make us stronger while he does it.

Galatians 5:19-21
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
