But forty years after the Israelites left Egypt, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses addressed the people of Israel, telling them everything the LORD had commanded him to say. Deuteronomy 1:3 NLT
Today you won’t find any traditional cities of refuge, but you will find the foundational principles almost everywhere. These principles can be seen in the world’s many laws limiting the punishment of those found guilty of manslaughter.
Manslaughter is much different from murder. Both involve causing someone’s death, but the first is accidental.
The most important biblical principle—complete forgiveness and protection upon the death of the high priest—is clearly seen in your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Since His ascension, Jesus is exalted forever at God the Father’s right hand (Acts 2:33; 5:31; 7:55-56; Romans 8:34; Ephesians 1:10; Colossians 3:1; Hebrews 1:3; 8:1; 10:12; 12:2). There Jesus ever lives to pray and intercede for you (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25; 9:24; 1 John 2:1).
How terrible to be guilty of accidentally killing a fellow human being. How wonderful to be protected judicially, and completely forgiven and protected spiritually by the Lord. What a great High Priest!
Prayer: Lord, You want me seek refuge in Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You so much that He is my Lord and Savior.
