Concerning the thief on the cross…

Friends, please understand that Jesus Christ:

"...Was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers..."
— (Romans 15:8).

He said so himself:

"...I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
— (Matthew 15:24).

That is why he commanded his apostles saying:

"...Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
— (Matthew 10:5-6).

And that is what the thief on the cross was! A lost sheep of the house of Israel. Because salvation is of the Jews. He was already born of water and of the Spirit. We know this because the house of Israel:

"...Were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea..."
— (1 Corinthians 10:1-2).

As Jesus Christ said:

"...Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God."
— (John 3:5).

And after his resurrection, Jesus Christ showed unto his apostles that:

"...Repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem."
— (Luke 24:47).

And that is what the apostles preached when the New Testament began on the day of pentecost:

"...Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call."
— (Acts 2:38-39).

This is how men are born of water and of the Spirit in the New Testament. As it is written:

"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
— (Romans 10:13).

Baptism in the name of Jesus Christ is therefore for the remission of sins. Because the blood of Jesus Christ was:

"...Shed for many for the remission of sins."
— (Matthew 26:28).

It is written again:

"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."
— (Acts 4:12).

Amen. Therefore, stop perverting this man’s salvation and apply it to yourself in order to justify your open rebellion against the gospel of Christ.

Many scholars believe the thief on the cross died under the old covenant.

Jesus has not yet ascended to heaven when the thief died. In fact Jesus never ascended to back to heaven until 40 days after His resurrection.
Jesus didn't tell the thief he was going to heaven. He told him he was going to paradise, the same place Lazarus went.
Jesus didn't lead the captives free out of paradise until He ascended.
