Now when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard; but Paul was permitted to dwell by himself with the soldier who guarded him. ... Then Paul dwelt two whole years in his own rented house, and received all who came to him, preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no one forbidding him. Acts 28:16, 30-31 NKJV
What must it have been like to be Paul’s guard? You’ve been assigned to keep an eye on this wandering preacher. He doesn’t seem dangerous, at least not physically, but there’s something about him, something about this gospel he keeps harping on. You see for yourself how it gets under the skin of the religious bigwigs who visit him—if this carpenter of his bugs them that much, maybe there’s something to it. And he treats you like a real person, with thoughts and feelings and experiences, which you’re not used to. You’re thinking you might just ask him about this Jesus.
Who has been assigned to you in this season of life—who is around you on a regular basis that sees your habits and words and behavior? How are you reflecting Jesus? How can you invest in these people the way Jesus invests in you? The story of how God has changed you might just be the difference maker for them. Don’t pass up the opportunity.
Prayer: Jesus, give me Your wisdom, Your heart, for those around me and let me represent You well enough to make them curious about You.
