Hey guys.
I've got a really bad mouth and I try to control it but it's just no use-I can't.
I live in a place where in there is no restriction as to what you can watch on TV. We watch all kinds of stuff, action, thrill, crime, adult.I think this developed gradualy from childhood. You know, movies and stuff.

Atleast in day, you find me cursing over fifty times.I just don't know how to stop this, it's like a part of me.

Is this right and if not, how do I stop? Thanks...

You Can!

First of all, it's not gonna happen over night!
You are gonna have to really work hard at it!

Second, I know what you are feeling!
I used to cuss... A LOT!
Some of my friends cuss and you just have to tell yourself not to.
like make up a new word for the real word and then eventually you wont even need those!
You can do it!

cHabbit?

I to know how you feel. Alot of my friends curse and I felt like if I didn't curse then you weren't cool. but then I realized that it was becoming a habbit so I kept praying to God and asking him to help so then, gradually I stopped, and boy does it feel good.

I, too, find myself struggling with cursing. A thing that helps me out is this:

1. Pray: Pray to God and ask Him to help you and guide you in all of your struggles and all of the hurtles you have to jump to follow Him.
2. Think before You Speak: I tend to speak my mind without thinking, and inasmuch, I curse before I even know what I said. If I slow down, and think of what I'm going to say - I can prevent the curse from coming out.
3. Meditate in the Word: Meditate in God's Word, and think of some passages throughout the day to keep your mind focused on God and the Bible, rather than your surroundings and cursing.

I hope I helped a little!

i think thats something almost everyone struggles with, most people dont think of it as a result of peer pressure but it really is. the things i use to help are bywords, like i will say "cheese wiz!" or "fudge sickles" instead of acually cussing, it helps but its still something i struggle with. only god can solve your problem completely. good luck and god bless!+

Dear Lord.....You are in the mire son. In the pit. The psalmist said "he hath taken me out of the pit"

Only God Almighty can help you.

"The blood of Jesus cleanseth us from all sin"

There is 'hope' for you in Jesus.

I was like that last time too before I really came to know the Lord. Cursing and swearing at almost anything. Now the sickening habit is gone, well almost because I still experience 'repercussions' every now and then when something terrible happens. I won't shout it out but I would like curse in my head and would feel bad after that because I know that this kind of language does not belong to the Lord. But I know that this will eventually be completely eradicated from my life the more I seek Him .
It's not an easy task especially with the people around you and the media constantly hurling vulgarities at everything. But hey, with the Lord's help, nothing is too great for Him to handle.

Hi scofieldII, I think you know where your problem is coming from

The bible says,

Matthew 12:34
For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.

may i suggest you stop watching TV, movies and listening to secular music for some time and dedicate your time to read your bible. Fill your self with the word of God and eventually you will see your words will be a blessing to your friends and people around you. People will be comforted and word of blessing will naturally come out of your mouth.

I agree with journalgirl here, it will require a lot of self discipline and Patience on your self.

Bless you

Matthew 12:34 For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.

The perfect Scripture.

Ephesians 4:29
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

1 Peter 3:10
For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

James 3:9-12 (Amplified Bible)
9 With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men who were made in God's likeness!
10 Out of the same mouth come forth blessing and cursing. These things, my brethren, ought not to be so.
11 Does a fountain send forth [simultaneously] from the same opening fresh water and bitter?
12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine figs? Neither can a salt spring furnish fresh water.

I can tell you from experience that secular movies, tv shows and music can easily affect what is in your heart and mind (thoughts). Journalgirl is right. Try and keep trying to refrain from watching certain secular movies and shows that have such evil in them (cursing, nudity, etc). Same with music. Not all shows are horrible even though secular, but to find such decent shows to enjoy a little entertainment is not going to be easy.

For me, as for TV shows I love 80's, early 90's shows like Family Matters and The Cosby Show. Those two are fair to call family friendly shows (in my personal view anyway).

Scofield,

You've been given good advice in this thread. There's an old computer related saying that comes to my mind: "Garbage In = Garbage Out".

I still struggle with sin, but I've found that the more time I spend with God in prayer & meditation, in His Word, and in interacting with other believers, the less temptation I have to do the other stuff.

"The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more." (Ro 5:20)

I do not know where you are at spiritually right now. This thread was started months ago and for all I know this is not a problem for you anymore.

From my experience and interpretation of what the Bible has to say, cursing is sin.

(Ephesians 5:4 ESV)
Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.

I charge you to see if in your Christian life whether you are consistently walking in the Spirit or the flesh.

(Galatians 5:13-26 ESV)
For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another. But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

I ask you who is running your ship? Galatians chapter 5 says you are either walking by the Spirit or you are gratifying the desires of your flesh. When you walk in the Spirit, the Spirit gives you His desires which are contrary to the desires of the flesh. That does not mean that those fleshly desires are not there. It just means that the Spirit provides a greater desire for what He desires than what your flesh desires.

How do we walk by the Spirit then and let the Spirit's desires become stronger than the desires of the flesh?

1) In your heart, acknowledge that you are hopelessly helpless without Jesus. Let this have a devastating effect on your pride to humble you.

For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.
(Romans 7:18 ESV)

2) Since there is nothing good in us apart from the Holy Spirit, you ought to pray that He would make you love Him since in your flesh you are not able to love God.

3) Have faith that He is working in you and will continue to until you die.

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
(Philippians 1:6 ESV)

4) Repent. That means you agree with God's view of your sin and hate it. This causes you to turn from it and walk away from it.

5) If you fall on your face, repeat step 3 and 4 in all humility and sincerity.

Our Christian walk WILL fail if we try to do it from our own willpower and apart from the Holy Spirit.
