"[As for] the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will not listen to you! "But we will certainly do whatever has gone out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For [then] we had plenty of food, were well-off, and saw no trouble. Jeremiah 44:16-17 NKJV

The men of Judah who spoke the above words were in a dangerous place spiritually—unwilling to listen to what God was telling them through Jeremiah.

“These daring sinners do not attempt excuses, but declare they will do that which is forbidden,” Matthew Henry writes in his concise commentary. “Those who disobey God, commonly grow worse and worse, and the heart is more hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”

These men were so hardened that they were burning special perfume to the queen of heaven (the moon). These are people who knew better, but their consciences were becoming hardened.

Are you aware of a clear biblical mandate that you aren’t obeying? Listen to Jeremiah’s response (Jeremiah 44:23): “Because you have burned incense and because you have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD or walked in His law, in His statutes or in His testimonies, therefore this calamity has happened to you, as [at] this day."

Repent before God’s judgment arrives.

Prayer: Lord, I confess my sin before You. I repent of doing things my way. I will walk with You and obey You.
