Here is the sea, vast and wide, teeming with creatures beyond number -- living things both large and small. ...All of them wait for you to give them their food at the right time. Psalm 104:25, 27 CSB

On July 4, 1776, the thirteen American colonies declared their independence from England. What if we as Christians allowed this date to remind us of our dependence on God?

It’s not just the sea creatures who wait for His provision. Jesus said His Father also feeds the birds and clothes the flowers. And we as human beings, who have the ability to “sow or reap or gather into barns…labor or spin thread” (Matthew 6:26, 28), only do those things by God’s grace. As Moses told the ancient Israelites, “Remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth” (Deuteronomy 8:18).

Ultimately, human life itself is granted by God and under His control. In His parable of the rich fool, Jesus described a farmer whose abundant crops led him to build larger barns. Though the man thought he would “take life easy; eat, drink and be merry” (Luke 12:19), Jesus reported that God would say to him, “This very night your life will be demanded from you” (v.20).

Dependence is our true human condition. The sooner we acknowledge God’s supremacy, the happier and less stressed we’ll be.

Prayer: Father, I need You. Please be my everything.
