PSALM 119: 35-37
Direct me in the path of your commands,
for there I find delight.
Turn my heart toward your statutes
and not toward selfish gain.
Turn my eyes away from worthless things;
preserve my life according to your word.

There are a lot of people in this world who are crying out for various things. Some are crying out for money, so they can fill their hungry bellies, the homeless crying out for a affordable housing, so they can get out of the cold and into a warn bed. Others who have far more than the homeless people are crying out for justice, are crying out for higher wages, for better roads and highways and the list goes on and on. But the psalmist here is not crying out for a place to sleep, or a better work place or for justice, no his cry is none of the above that I have mention, his cry is directed towards God. What does he cry for?

1) His cry is for God to teach him how to follow His decrees.

He wanted to know how to follow God’s decrees (Rules or Laws). He wanted God to teach him the basics on how he could follow (carry out) the laws of God. His cry was not how to break the laws or abused of the laws of God, but solely to follow them. This is not what the world is crying for today, they are not crying out to God asking Him to teach them how to follow his decrees, no quite the opposite, but this man desperately wanted nothing more than to follow God’s Word.

He wanted to understand the laws or Word of God, it was his heart’s cry to know and understand so that he could keep it and obey it with all of his heart.

2) His cry is for God to direct him in the path of his commands.

He wanted God to give him direction to lead him the path of the Word. Have you ever asked for direction from God, and He has shown you from His word. This book called the ‘Word Of God’ is referred to it as a ‘road map,’ which gives you direction to where you want to go. All of us at one time had to humble ourselves and ask for direction to where you wanted to go.

Now I know there are some people who will not or find it hard to ask another person for direction, I guess it has to do with their ego, (pride) they don’t want to be seen as a person who should know better, or they have been living there all of their lives and still don’t know where to find the place. Saints never feel that way when you want direction from God’s and His Word, don’t let your ego (pride) stand in the way, the bible says ask of God and he will give you the desires of thine heart.

3) His cry is for God to turn his heart and his eyes.

To turn his heart towards God’s laws, and not towards selfish gain. There are so many things in this world that are reaching out for our attention, and they will do their best to try to get it. The psalmist cry is that God would turn his heart towards God’s law and not to selfish gain. The selfish gain does nothing for the soul, but it just feeds self, and it always temporal and not eternal. He ask God to turn his eyes away from worthless things, and renew his life according to His word.

There are a lot of things that we would never buy, because they are worthless, they do not last, you are wasting your time on them. But you will be surprised of how many people have a pile of worthless things in their home, garage, things that you knew that it was not worth buying, and it ends upon the pile called ‘worthless.’ Seek the things that are costly today, seek God and His Word, for the Word of God is a treasure worth finding. The psalmist ask God to Teach Him, Give him, Direct him, and Turn him, towards God and His Word, that was his desperate cry.

What are you crying out for today? Are you crying out for the things of this world, or are you crying out for God and His word.

Psalm 34: 6 ‘This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.’ (KJV) Call out to Him today, He will hear you.
