DO YOU KNOW HOW THE APOSTLES DIED?

Matthew Suffered martyrdom in Ethiopia, killed by a sword wound.

Mark Died in Alexandria, Egypt, after being dragged by horses through the
streets until he was dead.

Luke- was hanged in Greece as a result of his tremendous preaching to the
lost.

John Faced martyrdom when he was boiled in huge basin of boiling oil
during a wave of persecution in Rome. However, he was miraculously delivered
from death. John was then sentenced to the mines on the prison island of
Patmos . He wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation on Patmos.
The apostle John was later freed and returned to serve as Bishop of Edessa
in modern Turkey. He died as an old man, the only apostle to die peacefully.

Peter was crucified upside down on an x-shaped cross. According to church
tradition it was because he told his tormentors that he felt unworthy to die
in the same way that Jesus Christ had died.

James, Just The leader ! of the church in Jerusalem, was thrown over a
hundred feet down from the southeast pinnacle of the Temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. When they discovered that he survived the fall, his enemies beat James to death with a fuller's club.
* This was the same pinnacle where Satan had taken Jesus during the
Temptation.

James the Great, son of Zebedee, was a fisherman by trade when Jesus
called him to a lifetime of ministry. As a strong leader of the church,
James was ultimately beheaded at Jerusalem. The Roman officer who guarded
James watched amazed as James defended his faith at his trial.
Later, the officer walked beside James to the place of execution.
Overcome by conviction, he declared his new faith to the judge and knelt
beside James to accept
beheading as a Christian.

Bartholomew also known as Nathaniel Was a missionary to Asia. He
witnessed for our Lord in present day Turkey. Bartholomew was martyred for
his preaching in Armenia where he was flayed to death by a whip.

Andrew was crucified on an x-shaped cross in Patras, Greece! . After
being whipped severely by seven soldiers they tied his body to the cross
with cords to prolong his agony. His followers reported that, when he was
led toward the cross, Andrew saluted it in these words: "I have long desired
and expected this happy hour. The cross has been consecrated by the body of
Christ hanging on it." He continued to preach to his tormentors for two days
until he expired.

Thomas Was stabbed with a spear in India during one of his missionary
trips to establish the church in the sub-continent.

Jude, The brother of Jesus Was killed with arrows when he refused to deny
his faith in Christ.

Matthias The apostle chosen to replace the traitor Judas Iscariot, was
stoned and then beheaded.

Barnabas One of the group of seventy disciples, wrote the Epistle of
Barnabas. He preached throughout Italy and Cyprus. Barnabas was stoned to
death at Salonica.

Paul Was tortured and then beheaded by the evil Emperor Nero at Rome in
A.D. 67. Paul! endured a lengthy imprisonment which allowed him to write his
many epistles to the churches he had formed throughout the Roman Empire.
These letters, which taught many of the foundational doctrines of
Christianity, form a large portion of the New Testament.
Perhaps this is a reminder to us that our sufferings here are indeed minor
compared to the intense persecution and cold cruelty faced by the apostles
disciples during their times for the sake of the Faith.
And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake:

But he that endureth to the end shall be saved. Matthew 10:22.

If the Apostles died such a cruel and gruesome death isn't it possible that
Christ died an even more gruesome death for He died for your and my sins.
Think about it! The sufferings of Christ are real. In fact much more
gruesome and cruel than we can imagine and have seen in movies.

great post, thank you for it.

It's amazing how much the christian world has changed. How our leaders are honoured, wear crowns, have gold and jewells on them.. It's amazing still how we want to be christians but to be spared from all these kind of things... We think Jesus is there just to help us live our lives easier, carry us through hard times, and if possible be our own jenie. Christianity sure wasn't like this 2000 years ago.

I have always wondered if this is the actual, historically provable way that they died, or is it just tradition.

.

I'm sorry to sound skeptical as well, but are there Bible references to these claims? I'd love to have the Bible references to read it for myself. Thanks to anyone that may help.

Most of these deaths are not mentioned in the Bible (i think just one is). It's normal to be this way, because most of the authors of the New Testament are these very men that died. Anyway, Biblical tradition, is worthy of being taken into consideration, as long as it is not interfering with God's Word. Most schollars agree this is what happened, because at the moment we don't have evidence to say otherwise. Anyway, it's just a problem of history not theology...

Well that makes sense, great to see you again sebi ;) I still remember you from my first days on TalkJesus. May God bless you my friend.

AS brother sebi is saying, As long us this historical truths dose not contradict with biblical truths there is no harm of considering.
in fact i believe they can give us more insites to the word of God.

I had a chance to visit northern part of India (kerela) in 2005 where Thomas Was stabbed with a spear during one of his missionary trips to establish the church in the sub-continent.
And I believed it is true due to the evidences that are still their,

So their might be evidences which can make us accept this historical truths if we specifically try to study the other places where the apostles died.

This is a wonderful insight into the demise of the great Saints of Jesus.

Thankyou for posting this.

I have always refused to believe anything that is "extra" to the Bible. I have heard of these ways of dying before and always felt that they were made up.

Isn't it funny how one person will believe it is true just because someone says that is how they died, and then you run across someone like me who refuses to believe it.

I guess you can put me in the same category as Doubting Thomas. He refused to believe that Jesus was alive until he had proof, until he touched the actual wounds in Jesus's side.

I doubt this list until I find out otherwise.

Other than that, it is an interesting list.

And I guess that if it were truly necessary for me to believe the list is true, the Lord will put it in my heart.

Not believeing about the list won't keep me from getting into heaven . . .

I have been at work all day and am rambling on and on and on . . . .

For the bible says
Philippians 3:15-16
All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained.

I really admired of your choice to stick to what God has reviled it to you.

just to give you some biblical insight please refere hebrews 11:32-40(Amplified Bible)

32And what shall I say further? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets,(A)

33Who by [the help of] faith subdued kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promised blessings, closed the mouths of lions,(B)

34Extinguished the power of raging fire, escaped the devourings of the sword, out of frailty and weakness won strength and became stalwart, even mighty and resistless in battle, routing alien hosts.(C)

35[Some] women received again their dead by a resurrection. Others were tortured [a]to death with clubs, refusing to accept release [offered on the terms of denying their faith], so that they might be resurrected to a better life. [I Kings 17:17-24; II Kings 4:25-37.]

36Others had to suffer the trial of mocking and scourging and even chains and imprisonment.

37They were stoned to death; they were lured with tempting offers [to renounce their faith]; they were sawn asunder; they were slaughtered by the sword; [while they were alive] they had to go about wrapped in the skins of sheep and goats, utterly destitute, oppressed, cruelly treated--

38[Men] of whom the world was not worthy--roaming over the desolate places and the mountains, and [living] in caves and caverns and holes of the earth.

39And all of these, though they won divine approval by [means of] their faith, did not receive the fulfillment of what was promised,

40Because God had us in mind and had something better and greater in view for us, so that they [these heroes and heroines of faith] should not come to perfection apart from us [before we could join them].
