I dont think Christians can or should.
We must keep our lives pure, and how can we focus on God
when there is music with profanity, sexual terms, and violence
mentioned around us? When we let God in our lives, we focus on things
of Him, not of the world.

I voted "no", but I have a problem with the question. The problem is that the question is legalistic and legalism won't get you into the Kingdom (see Eph 2:8-9). Instead, we need to offer ourselves to God as living sacrifices so that His Spirit can renew our minds so that we no longer have a strong compulsion to listen to or watch objectionable stuff (see Ro 12:2).

I am in total agreement with SpiritLedEd on that being a matter of legalism. We are to be led of the Holy Spirit in all we do and He will let us know if something is okay or not. Keep a good conscience before God,
if you feel uneasy about doing something then do not do it.
That being said here is my take on the matter:
It depends on what is being sung. I heard a rap song the other day that consisted only of curse words. The one playing it and reveling in it had my sympathy.
But, I do not see the harm in a love song or other music if it is wholesome.
While I prefer to keep worship music on I do not mind listening to a few songs from my younger days.

I said yes because a 'Christian' can do whatever they want, just as non-Christians CAN. Does it make it right? Is it profitable? Does it bring glory to God? Of course not.

Too many 'Christians' try to take advantage of the liberty they have in Christ, so much so that they get off the straight and narrow, and turn to larger avenues always thinking that the Lord will be right there to forgive them for every little thing that they do, when half the time we don't comprehend the absolute holiness of God, and fall into sin without realizing it right away (some never). Repentance on a daily basis is important, but when you keep going back to your vomit, it becomes kinda 'yadda yadda yadda'.

Baby Christians sometimes think they have a big handle on sin, on idolatry, on always putting God first, when in fact, they really just have not quite gotten a good grip yet. Some 'babies' never grow up. And some are just premeditating killers of holiness.

I have a hard time listening to the music others listen to, and it really bothers me to hear a 10 year old reciting the words to 'I wanna take a ride on your disco stick' when they barely remember the words to John 3:16!! But I hear it, I listen to it, and I try to rearrange the words in my mind to bring God glory...but sometimes it is impossible. But that same child after two weeks of hearing my cd is singing 'There will be a day' by Jeremy Camp is awesome!

So yeah, a Christian can listen to any music they want...but they become idle words they will be judged for...IMO. :lightning

I love and enjoy a variety of music and, as apposed to my late grandparents, Elvis wasn't devil music!
St. Paul says that all things are permissible but all things are not profitable. For a Christian, music that is satanic in nature would not be wise or profitable. Similarly, those types of music that glorify rape and killing, etc., would strike me as being counter-conducive to a profitable spiritual life!

I voted, Yes to a point.

The reason being, we have liberty in Christ, and as such we actually can listen to what we *want.* But when we truly have Christ, we will hopefully *not want* to listen to music that glorifies sin.

I missed the yes to a point, but it really isn't necessary to many points made here already,(one being LovebirdsFlying... thanx I couldn't have said it better).

If we have the Spirit in our life and we live with that full exchange with the Spirit we get a repulsion to things that come between us and the Lord.

One of the best examples I can use is a song from my youth, touted as one of the most evil songs written at the time, War Pigs by Black Sabbeth. In English class I debated it was Christian based because of its content, even though my opponents in the debate had support and assistance from the teacher a very devoute Roman Catholic I still won the debate. When we look more recent, the band Linkin Park, even though they are an alternative rock band and often very vulgar in their music on their last 2 albums they had a song on each clearing pronouncing the need for redemption. The first was, What I've Done and then The New Divide.

This is just a few examples how relying on our own judgemental attitudes we simply miss messages we get. In a way limiting our interaction with the Holy Spirit.

I voted "Yes".

I listen to many different types of music, they do not influence the type of person I am.
While I do enjoy a very select few Christian songs, I can relate more to secular music, it talks about how I feel.
Christian music really hasn't done that for me.

I think we have to be careful because I heard of some records having bad messages hidden in them.I think we have to take into account maybe is the artist a christian or a devil worshiper?Obviously if we think that person is not living by Christ then I think we have to be very careful.I listen to christian music, but I do like Michael Jackson and Cliff Richard.
I think there are some that are obvious to stay away from.
I bel;ieve in all things do it for the glory of God,does it have a good moral message behind it because some music does its not all bad,I think if it does then I feel God has his hand on it.But if its just thumping swearing music then of course thats to stand well clear away. The bible tells us test all spirit and Im sure that the same with everything.Yes and music is a powerful force I think because in music its where we tend to get carried away in.

I think most secular music has to be not listened to. I think most heavy metal, hip-hop, and rap music is a no no in my book (I never listen to them). And certain country songs too, in my opinion. Especially songs that talk about partying, drinking, and things like that are not good to listen to.

The Bible -Not Man Is Our Roadmap as a Christian

That is a very good question - will we obey and listen to God or our "flesh?"

The Holy Scripture is our guide to everything - Here is only one part of scriptures out of hundreds that clearly tell a true christian what to do:

Colossians 2:20-23 (KJV) Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, (Touch not; taste not; handle not; Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

"God says no"

I voted, Yes to a point.

^ I echo those sentiments.

For the Sake Of New Christians I Say This

Many christians quote constantly (like here in this thread) that they have liberty in the Lord to do or hear what they want.

Accordingly - for the sake of new christians I refute this as false error because the Bible teaches without Holiness no man shall see the Lord.

God gives us liberty to obey Him - "not sin."

If we listen to trash music and watch trash movies we are not christians - rather - we are sinners on our way to eternal hell.

I could say because I am a christian that now I have liberty to curse, drink alcohol, commit fornication and adultry, and kill if I want... but:

Any truly saved christian knows that Gods Holy Bible commands us to live Godly, Holy lives in order to get to Heaven.

If Jesus walked into your living room while you listened to music that glorified satan or if He caught you watching sexual scenes with all kinds of profanity -- Do you really believe He would stay around?

No - He would be gone because He hates sin and double standards.

Therefore - we christians do not have liberty to hear - watch or think anything we want just because we call ourselves christians.

God says no sin shall be in Heaven - so - would He tolerate sin in us on earth? God forbid.

What a difficult question.

Some people I have known are naturally musical. They are compelled to listen to music, life is music. They believe music is a powerful part of the created order. Observing the power music has over the world I cannot disagree with them. Also, music has also been used during the worship of God in both Old and New Testaments.

Lyrics and music are two seperate entities. You can have a wondeful piece of music but with demonic lyrics. I think the problem would rest with the lyrics. Perhaps the question could be revised.

As Christians we live in the spirit not in the flesh. We make melody and sing in our hearts to Jesus Christ. This is the life of love, showing others who Christ really is. We have perfect freedom in Christ. I will agree with the former posts concerning being led by the spirit.

Baa, baa.

Lolz, you is reading between the lines there. I don't think anyone is talkin' unholy extremes or disputing your points. I trust the Holy Spirits direction with these things. God willing, Elvis made it to the big concert in the sky; "Oh Happy Day." I'd like a front row seat.

I voted for 'yes, to a point.' I mean, nothing like Rob Zombie type music. But Linken Park is ok. :).

Was reading in Eccliastis, that once you sin, it doesn't want to let u go. :(. It gets harder to let go of. Saten says, "One try, and I'll never bug you again, because you will love it!" That's a lie.

i believe any music that lifts Jesus up we can listen to. let your conscience be your guide, i was told once that if Jesus was sitting next to you and would you be ok with what you were doing or watching, or listening to.
