1Corinthians 13:8-12
8*Love will last forever, but prophecy and speaking in unknown languages* and special knowledge will all disappear. 9*Now we know only a little, and even the gift of prophecy reveals little! 10*But when the end comes, these special gifts will all disappear.11*It’s like this: When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child does. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. 12*Now we see things imperfectly as in a poor mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity.* All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God knows me now.
The gifts of tongues and prophecy have not ceased BecuzHeLives. The end has not come and the two prophets of Revelation will prophesy, so the gift has not ceased.
Revelation 11:1-3
1*Then I was given a measuring stick, and I was told, “Go and measure the Temple of God and the altar, and count the number of worshipers. 2*But do not measure the outer courtyard, for it has been turned over to the nations. They will trample the holy city for 42 months. 3*And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will be clothed in sackcloth and will prophesy during those 1,260 days.”
1Corinthians 14:1-5
Let love be your highest goal, but also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives, especially the gift of prophecy. 2 For if your gift is the ability to speak in tongues,* you will be talking to God but not to people, since they won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious. 3 But one who prophesies is helping others grow in the Lord, encouraging and comforting them. 4 A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally in the Lord, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.5 I wish you all had the gift of speaking in tongues, but even more I wish you were all able to prophesy. For prophecy is a greater and more useful gift than speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church can get some good out of it.
For all those who don't approve of the NLT. Here is the KJV.
1Corinthians 14:1-5
Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. 5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
The false teaching of "tongues and prophecy have ceased already" is a device conjured up by satan so that individual believers and the body of Christ as a whole will not be built up in the Lord. When people become deceived into believing this lie it makes satan very happy.
