Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. 1 Timothy 6:17
It's easy to default to trusting in money. After all, it seems to solve problems, resolve anxieties, create friends, and generally make people happy. But there's a harsh reality behind this rosy picture.
Paul taught that money is unreliable. You might not have chosen that word, but think about it. Recent recessions wiped out billions of dollars of savings overnight. Banks collapsed. Financial institutions' folded. Solomon warned, "In the blink of an eye wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle. (Proverbs 23:5 NLT)
If you have money, good for you. Chances are good you worked hard or smart (or both) to earn it. But you still shouldn't put too much trust in it. That's tantamount to trusting in yourself, and Deuteronomy 8:18 (NKJV) says that "you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth." God is a surer foundation than wealth. He supplies everything you need, including love, faith, peace, and assurance before Him.
Prayer: God, I trust You above all things. Thank You for the wealth You've enabled me to earn. May I invest wisely, spend thriftily, give generously, and--above all-trust in You.
