But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, "Didn't I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?" Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed. John 18:26-27 NLT

Peter was so close to the adventure of a lifetime. Jesus had been arrested and Peter followed Him. Was the disciple going to attempt a rescue? That could have been his plan, but instead Peter hung out in a crowd listening for what may be happening to Jesus but doing everything he could to be invisible. One person noticed him and asked if he was with Jesus. Peter said no. Then, a second person asked the same question and was met with a not-so-silent eruption of denial. Then a third time is recorded in John 18:26-27. Peter wasn’t the rescuer he imagined he would be. He adopted the role of a coward who was given three opportunities to stand with Jesus but couldn’t bring himself to do so. Jesus had assured him that would happen.

Peter would still have the adventure of a lifetime, but he couldn’t be the hero he imagined himself to be. He would need to be the servant Jesus knew he could be. In the proper role, Peter could be useful. Peter could embrace adventure. These are things you can do.

Prayer: I don’t need to chase my own adventure to find Yours, Father. Help me take heart when my plans fail. It just means I need to keep looking for Your plan.
