But Moses said to God, "Who [am] I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?" So He said, "I will certainly be with you. And this [shall be] a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain." Exodus 3:11-12 NKJV
Moses had a heart for his Hebrew brothers and sisters languishing in Egypt while he hid out in Median. After all, he was forced to flee Egypt after he killed an Egyptian slave master for abusing a Hebrew slave.
But when God spoke from a burning bush and commanded Moses to return to Egypt and lead His people out of captivity, Moses answered with a long list of excuses.
Moses’ encounter with God at the burning bush teaches us an important truth about how we could respond when God calls us to a difficult—even humanly impossible—task, and it’s this: It’s not about our human skills or abilities, or even about how we perceive ourselves. Rather, it’s about knowing that our God promises to be with us and to give us everything we need to accomplish the task.
Prayer: Lord, strengthen me and encourage me every day to do all You call me to do—especially when Your calling seems humanly impossible. You are my God, so I know it’s not about me but about whom I serve.
