And she said, As the Lord your God lives, I have not a loaf baked but only a handful of meal in the jar and a little oil in the bottle. See, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it—and die. 1 Kings 17:12 AMPC
Elijah was a wanted man. He was guilty of praying. Ahab was a king whose legacy included some very bad public policy. God worked to get his attention, but the king had no use for the Lord.
At God’s direction, Elijah prayed that no rain would fall. No gentle afternoon rain. No summer squall. The clouds left town. The waterways dried up, and each passing day made weather spotters long for precipitation.
King Ahab wasn’t happy, but Elijah took heart in God’s promises—including His promise that Elijah would always be fed. A widow in a nearby town was gathering what was needed to make one last meal for her son and herself when Elijah showed up and essentially said, “I understand you will take care of me.”
God supplied the miracle that kept the widow, her son, and Elijah healthy and fed. And He also used Elijah to give this dear woman some desperately needed encouragement.
Prayer: I need to be encouraged so I can encourage others, Father. May Your words give me the courage to tell others of Your goodness.
