You placed the world on its foundation so it would never be moved. ...Then you set a firm boundary for the seas, so they would never again cover the earth. Psalm 104:5, 9 NLT
We hear dire predictions of our planet’s demise due to climate change. Some of us, though, can remember terrifying ten-and twenty-year predications that are now thirty or forty years old…and not even close to reality.
Human beings do have a God-given responsibility to care for the earth. Adam’s obligation to “tend and watch over” Eden (Genesis 2:15) comes down to each of us, wherever we live. But if we believe God’s Word, we can take heart in verses like today’s—describing the earth’s superintendence by God Himself.
And there are others. “As long as the earth remains,” God said after the flood, “there will be planting and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night” (Genesis 8:22). “Not a single sparrow,” Jesus proclaimed, “can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it” (Matthew 10:29). Ultimately, “the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1).
Only God determines when our planet’s time is up. “The present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed” (2 Peter 3:7).
Prayer: Lord, may I be ready for that day. Use me to prepare others as well.
