“Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us. For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things. For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.” (Philippians 3:17-21 NASB1995)
This was then, nearly 2000 years ago. Now we are way beyond this! Now the majority professing faith in Jesus Christ are literally “enemies of the cross of Christ,” for they are relying on a verbal confession of faith in Jesus Christ to get them into heaven when they die. For the primary and most popularized gospel message being taught here these days is not the gospel that Jesus, Paul, and the other New Testament apostles taught – not if you read what they taught in full context of what they taught, and not out of context.
For so many people are now accepting a very diluted and altered gospel message which teaches lip service only as the path to salvation from sin and to eternal life with God. And even if they use the term, “repent,” which many no longer do, it is not usually biblical repentance being spoken of. For to repent of our sins is not just giving a verbal confession of them, or just saying we are sorry for our sins, but biblical repentance has to do with a change of mind and heart resulting in a change of lifestyle and behavior.
For the grace of God, which is bringing us salvation, sent Jesus Christ to that cross to put our sins to death with him so that we will now die with him to sin and walk in obedience to his commands in holy living, living to please our Lord in all that we do and say, and no longer to live for the pleasures of our sinful flesh. For God’s grace is training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives while we await our Lord’s return (Romans 6:1-23; Luke 9:23-26; Titus 2:11-14).
And, yes, there are still some who are teaching holy living, moral purity, self-denial, death to sin, and obedience to God. But even many of them are teaching it more as a recommendation, or as something we should do, but not as something required by God that if we do not do that we will not have salvation from sin and we won’t have eternal life with God. And by doing it this way, they are basically making death to sin and obedience to God and holy living optional. And so many do not take God and his word to heart.
So, we must not rely on other humans to give us the truth of the gospel, for so many are teaching a false and altered gospel intended to appease human flesh, and to not offend the ungodly of this world who they are trying to attract to their “church” gatherings. We must be those who study the Scriptures for ourselves, IN CONTEXT, and who rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. Yet this doesn’t mean we exclude what others teach, but we must test everything we hear against the truth of God’s word.
But context is critical. For, have you ever said something or written something, and had someone take only a portion of a thought or a sentence and then misquote you? It changes the whole meaning of what you said, doesn’t it? And it may actually have the opposite presentation of what you intended. And some people do this intentionally, knowing that they are misquoting you, because they want to stir up dissension and they don’t want other people accepting what you are saying, for whatever their reasons.
And there are people who do this intentionally with the Scriptures, for the whole purpose to lead people astray to a false gospel so that they will not surrender their lives to Jesus as Lord of their lives, and so they will not bow to the Lord in submission to his will and purpose for our lives, and so they will continue in their sins, and not in walks of obedience to the Lord. For they are being told that repentance and obedience to God is “works salvation.” But the true gospel teaches death to sin and walks of obedience to our Lord.
And the true gospel message teaches that if all we do is give lip service to the Lord, and we do not deny self, putting sin to death by the Spirit daily, and if we do not walk in obedience to our Lord’s commands, in practice, in the power of God, then we do not have salvation from sin, and we will not inherit eternal life with God, regardless of what our lips profess, in relation to faith in Jesus. For faith in Jesus, if genuine, is persuaded and gifted to us by God, and it results in us dying to sin and obeying our Lord, in practice.

Based off Isaiah 55
“Come to Me all you who thirst; come to waters.
Listen to Me, and eat what’s good today,
And your soul will delight in richest of fare.
Give ear to Me, and you will live.
I have made an eternal covenant with you.
Wash in the blood of the Lamb.”
Seek the Lord while He may be found; call on Him.
Let the wicked forsake his way, in truth.
Let him turn to the Lord, and he will receive mercy.
Freely, God pardons him.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,”
declares the Lord, our God.
“My word that goes out of My mouth is truthful.
It will not return to Me unfulfilled.
My word will accomplish all that I desire,
And achieve the goal I intend.
You will go in joy and be led forth in peace.
The mountains will burst into song… before you,
And all of the trees clap their hands.”
