Eternal... everlasting.. forever.. never ending..
The phrase "eternal life" is in the New Testament over 40 times. In nearly half of these verses, Jesus Himself is speaking.

Matt 19:29; "And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name's sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life.
Matt 25:46; "These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
Mark 10:17; As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
Mark 10:30; but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life.
Luke 18:30; who will not receive many times as much at this time and in the age to come, eternal life."
John 3:15; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.
John 3:16; "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
John 3:36; "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."
John 4:14; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life."
John 5:24; "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
John 5:39; "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me;
John 6:27; "Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal."
John 6:40; "For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day."

John 6:47; "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life.
John 6:54; "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
John 10:28; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
John 12:50; "I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me."
John 17:2; even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.
John 17:3; "This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

Luke, Paul, and John mention it quite a bit also.

Acts 13:46 Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.
Acts 13:48 When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.
Rom 2:7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life;
Rom 5:21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Rom 6:22 But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Gal 6:8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
1Tim 1:16 Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.
1Tim 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
Tit 1:2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago,
Tit 3:7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
1Jn 1:2 and the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us—
1Jn 2:25 This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.
1Jn 3:15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
1Jn 5:11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
1Jn 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
1Jn 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
Jude 1:21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.

There are four places in scripture where people asked Jesus how to get eternal life.

Matt 19:16; And someone came to Him and said, "Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?"
Mark 10:17; As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
Luke 10:25; And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
Luke 18:18; A ruler questioned Him, saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

Jesus's answer could be another thread entirely, but the point here is, there was an answer. There "IS" eternal life. Another life after this one.

Eternal life is often mistaken for immortality. The two are not the same.

Immortality pertains to a supernatural body with perpetual youth.

Eternal life, on the other hand, is a spirit kind of life; which is why it's possible for
people to obtain eternal life prior to obtaining immortality.

For example: Christ had eternal life all along (John 5:26, 1John 1:1-2) but
according to Rom 6:9 and Rev 1:18, he didn't obtain immortality till after his
crucified dead body was restored to life.

Likewise Christ's believing followers have eternal life now, today (John 5:24) but
according to Rom 8:23-25, 1Cor 15:51-53, and 1Thss 4:14-17 they won't obtain
immortality until their resurrections.

The properties of eternal life are a little easier to understand when juxtaposed with
natural forms of life.

Human life was created.

Eternal life wasn't created, i.e. it always was, it always is, and it always shall be.

There's a large variety of created life.

There is only one eternal life.

Human life's primary characteristic is human nature; roughly defined as the
fundamental dispositions and traits of the human being.

Eternal life's primary characteristic is divine nature, roughly defined as the
fundamental dispositions and traits of the supreme being.

So when the New Testament speaks of eternal life, it isn't necessarily speaking of
longevity, rather; it's sometimes speaking of divinity, e.g. 2Pet 1:3-4 & 1John 1:1-2.

This really has nothing to do with the Bible, but it's a little humorous, and illustrates many atheists views.

So what do we make of these verses ??
Acts 13:46 And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first be spoken to you.
But since ye thrust it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, lo, we turn to the nations.
47 For so has the Lord commanded us, I have set thee for a light of nations, That thou be for salvation unto the uttermost of the earth.
48 And as the nations heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of God: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

JESUS left so clear, saying: All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Matthew 28:18

So, in this current millennium, the seventh and last millennium, or seventh and last Day, the LORD's Day, all things in whole world are under JESUS's control, nothing random happens, understand?

Matthew 25:31-34 and 41&46

31 When the Son of man shall come in His glory, and all the holy angels(true believers- Luke 20:35-36.Take a look) with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory:

32 And before Him shall be gathered all nations: and He shall separate them one from another(this will literally be fulfilled from now on), as a shepherd divideth His sheep from the goats:

33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

34 Then shall the King say unto them on His right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the KINGDOM prepared for you from the foundation of the world: ( Revelation 11:15-18. Take a look.)

41 Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the Devil and his angels(messengers):

46 And these shall go away into EVERLASTING PUNISHMENT: but the righteous into life ETERNAL.

The EVERLASTING PUNISHMENT was previously determined to start in this current time, precisely in this beginning of the seventh and last millennium, so it will NEVER END from now on, it's for EVER.

When ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the DESOLATION thereof is nigh.
Woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in these days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and WRATH upon the people. These are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory- Luke 21:26-27.

Get ready

'Eternal life' is the wording used for those that go to eternal bliss.

'Eternal torment' is used for those that don't.

The word 'life' is a reference to being with the Lord. The lost would never have 'life'. Only 'death'.

I nust admit. This was something that baffled me for more than a decade but then, I believe, the Spirit revealed it to me. "Eternal Life" is the life of God in us, It is a quality of life not a quantity of life. God's .life is not subject to Chronos/Time It does not leave a past for a present, which can be any number of futures. No! In God and for God the past, present, and future do not exist. He IS, and for God, all things temporal are either fulfilled or unfulfilled ocurrance He observes as less then Himself but in Him thet have already occurred (or not), this is why He can speak in the past as if it is future because IN HIM it is already.

So then, as much as I love Amazing Grace when it says "when we've been there 10,000 years" it is in error because experiencing the Eternal state or realm is NOT an extention of the temporal state or realm. There is not experience of past thru presents into futures. Like for God it is ever NOW. And all who are truly born from above are living both realms NOW simultaneously only most still are centered and focused in the temporal. If you are born of His Spirit you are no longer mere humans but eterna;l beings in temporal bodies. BE the children of God. BE Christ-like. Ever NOW.

"Eternal Life" is the life of God in us, It is a quality of life not a quantity of life.

1Cor 15:12; Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
1Cor 15:13; But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised;
1Cor 15:14; and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain.
1Cor 15:15; Moreover we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised.
1Cor 15:16; For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised;
1Cor 15:17; and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.
1Cor 15:18; Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
1Cor 15:19; If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied.
1Cor 15:20; But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.

Thanks B-A-C- but I missed how this is relative to my post. YES, if Christ has not been raised all our preaching and teaching is in vain. I agree! Because of the redemptive atonement through His death, burial, and resurrection, we who are already condemned, are saved, and though OUR sin has separated us from God (Isaiah 49:2) through Him we are reconciled. Amen

Eternal life isn't simply "Jesus in us", yes that's a part of it. We certainly can't have eternal life without Him.
But it IS also quantity. Not just quality. There is another life after this one. An eternal life. The 80 or 90 years some
of us have in this life is just grain of sand, compared to all the grains of sand on the Entire Earth. Eternity is forever.
Not just 80 or 90 years.

If you don't believe that, your faith is in vain, and you are to be pitied.

Yes that is one of the points I was addressing, so now I get where you were coming from, although I disagree that eternal life is a continuance of this temporal experience of life. As I see it, it is not just more "days" and "years" where forever may only describe as long as there is an ever, but an entirely different reality where Chronos/time no longer exists (Revelation 10:6).

Revelation 10:6

King James, is a little tricky here. Most of the other translations simply say no more delay. Could the "interval of time" in King James be a delay or waiting period also?

Over 20 verses in the New testament speak of an "age" or "eon". There is a current age, but yet another age to come after this one.

Matt 12:32; "Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

I am very familiar with all the translations of Revelations 10:6 but there is a problem with some of them. The word used in the Greek is Chronos which in ancient times referred to the passage pf time like when an infant grows into an adult and eventually gets old and dies, In modern times we get Chronology from it and Chronos refers to the idea of time used in watches and the passing of seasons etc. but the Greek word "delay" is NOT in the text at all. The problem occurs because many of the alleged Chrostoan scholars of the Critical School are not actual Textual Critics in this field but people claiming to be Christians (Levine, Crossan, Borg etc,) who make it their goa;l to think up ever newer criticisms and that is not the same. They base their spin on the two heavily edited 4th century texts (Vaticanus and Sinaiticus) which disagree with each other on nearly every page. In my opinion, these are NOT reliable since each is a hodge podge as are all of their alleged translations. After the RSV trtanslators interpreted Chronos as "delay" they all followed but we KNOW that is not the word there. Chronos will no longer exist in the realm of eternity.

Isa 65:17; "For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former things will not be remembered or come to mind.
Isa 65:18; "But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create; For behold, I create Jerusalem for rejoicing And her people for gladness.
Isa 65:19; "I will also rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in My people; And there will no longer be heard in her The voice of weeping and the sound of crying.
Isa 65:20; "No longer will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, Or an old man who does not live out his days; For the youth will die at the age of one hundred And the one who does not reach the age of one hundred Will be thought accursed.

Even when the old heaven and Earth pass away, and the New Jerusalem comes down.. there will still be a concept of time. Age. years.

The temporal is always subject to chronos. New Earth, new chronos. Those born on the new Earth grow up and get old.
