When they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out, because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke with them and said, "Have courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." Mark 6:49-50 CSB
We’re so used to the idea of Jesus walking on the waves that it’s easy to miss the context. We need to put ourselves in His disciples’ sandals to get at the deeper reality in play here. When was the last time you were on a boat in a storm and saw someone walking toward you on the water? You wouldn’t be saying, “Oh, finally—here’s Frank!” You’d be freaking out.
But if the disciples were alarmed because they thought they saw a ghost, it went up a level when they saw it was Jesus. After this, there was no denying that He was not just a miracle worker but God Himself.
To follow Jesus means expecting the unexpected. He is always going to be who He is and act according to His character and nature, but the way He does things is seldom what we expect. Our comfort level with Jesus often hinges on our willingness to be in awe of Him, to trust His ways are better and higher than ours.
Prayer: Jesus, I want to always be blown away by who You are and what You’ve done, are doing, and will do.
