The historical book of 2 Chronicles focuses on the kings of Judah, the southern kingdom. This book gives extended treatment to zealous reformers like Asa, Joash, and Josiah. It also records the destruction of the Jews' beloved temple. However, it would be rebuilt and would be filled with God's glory centuries later when Jesus walked through its doors.

The author of 2 Chronicles is unknown, but several facts seem to support the tradition that Ezra the priest was the author. Along with 1 Chronicles, the book of 2 Chronicles was most likely compiled by an educated scribe or priest who had access to the extensive libraries compiled by Nehmiah.

The throne of David had been destroyed, but the line of David remained. Murders, treachery, battles, and captivity all threatened the messianic line; but it remained clear and unbroken. The fulfillment in Christ can be seen in the genealogies of Matthew 1 and Luke 3.

The temple planned by David and built by his son Solomon also foreshadowed the role Christ plays in the New Testament. Jesus said, "in this place there is One greater than the temple" - Matthew 12:6. He also likened His body to the temple: "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up" - John 2:19.

In Revelation 21:22, He replaced the temple in the New Jerusalem: "But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple."

God's promises cannot be thwarted. As you read this book, remember the joy God receives from the worship of His people. Rejoice in the glorious temple built to honor Him. Thank Jesus for coming to earth, saving us, and making us "a holy temple in the Lord" - Ephesians 2:22.

God Bless
