John's Gospel emphasizes the divine nature of Jesus, the Son of God. John wanted to prove conclusively that Jesus is the Son of God and that all who believe in Him will have eternal life. John's Gospel is primarily topical, not chronological, and it focuses on seven miracles and seven "I am" statements of Jesus.
This Gospel was written by John, one of Jesus' twelve disciples. John identifies himself only as the disciple "whom Jesus loved" - John 13:23; 19:26; 20:2; 21:7, 20. His knowledge of Palestinian geography and Jewish customs make it clear that he was a Palestinian Jew. And his attention to numbers and names indicate that he was an eyewitness.
This book conclusively demonstrates that Jesus is the only Son of God and the only source of salvation. "A man called Jesus" - John 9:11 is also "the Christ, the Son of the living God" - John 6:69. Jesus' deity is revealed in His seven "I am" statements: as the bread of life - John 6:35, 48; the light of the world - John 8:12; 9:5; the door - John 10:7, 9; the good shepherd - John 10:11, 14; the resurrection and the life - John 11:25; the way, the truth, and the life - John 14:6; and the true vine - John 15:1. Yet Jesus was also human. John points out Jesus' humanity. He was exhausted - John 4:6, thirst - John 4:7, grief-stricken - John 11:35, troubled - John 12:27, and able to die a human death - John 19:30.
Jesus, the Son of God, became a human being so that He could identify with us, understand our weaknesses, and ultimately die for us. But that was not the end of the story, for He was raised again in victory. Because He was raised, we too will be raised to be with Him forever.
He is the way, the truth, and the life. Find Him, and you have found all you need for this life and for the life to come.
God bless,
Dan
