Nehemiah provides us with another glimpse of Jesus as Healer and Savior.
Written by Nehemiah, this book records the events surrounding the third and final group of Jews who returned from exile in Babylon.
Nehemiah traveled back and forth between Babylon and Jerusalem - Nehemiah 2:1; 13:6. He led the Jews in rebuilding the wall surrounding Jerusalem - Nehemiah 2:18. Despite opposition, the wall was repaired in fifty-two days--a testament to God's power. Nehemiah also cleaned up the temple and called the people back to proper worship and living.
Like Jesus - Luke 2:52 and Ezra, Nehemiah found favor with God and with the Persian ruler, Artaxerxes I - Nehemiah 2:2, as prophesied by Daniel - Daniel 9:25-27. Nehemiah freely left his position as cupbearer and advisor in the Persian king's palace, in line with God's perfect will - Nehemiah 5:14; 8:9; 10:1; 13:6. In cooperation with Ezra, Nehemiah led the people in renewing their covenant with God.
Throughout this book, Nehemiah modeled steadfastness, courage, and compassion for the Jewish people. As he completed his God-given mission, he was constantly praying and depending upon God for success.
In Nehemiah we see a type of Christ, who brought healing and restoration to the Jews and all mankind, who was steadfast in prayer, and who focused on His role at His own expense. Essentially Nehemiah gave up the king's cup to take God's "cup"--the job of salvaging the Jews' land and temple and their lives, in preparation for the coming Messiah. Later the Christ to come--Jesus--would bear His Father's cup as well to take the sins of the whole world by going to the Cross.
